Hi

There is only one website with the 1911 census.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

There is no sign that any of the other subscription websties with in the near future are thinking of indexing the 1911 census and putting it online.

'In the 1911 census women were asked to state the ‘years the present marriage has lasted’, the number of children born alive to the present marriage (not just those who were living in the house) and how many had died.'

Do you know the name of the orphanage Charles was placed in?

Regards

Valda

Orpha Balstone (bn 1857 Chard) is in Sussex in 1881
RG11 1100 83 17

Possible for Francis
RG11 1670 111 13
Tailors apprentice aged 15 bn Ditton- so if this is him and he was apprenticed to a Tailor when discharged from the workhouse, he didnt stick at it - we see him as a carman and a butchers assistant in later records.

I think it's offered via another of the Genealogy websites, Valda.

She used both here

St Peter, Regent Square, Camden
1887 Sep 25, Eleanor Adelaide, d/o Francis John & Orphah Eleanor HANCOCK, 4 Marchmont St, Carman, born 1887 Sep 4

St Paul Lisson Grove Westminster
1893 Feb 5, William George Frederick, s/o Francis John & Orpha Helen HANCOCK, 143 Portman Buildings, Hostler
1894 Nov 18, Emily Hilda, d/o Francis John & Orpha Helen HANCOCK, 143 Portman Buildings, Carman, born 1894 Oct 7

See they are back in Cambridgeshire by 1901.

With having children baptised in CofE churches they are not likely to be Non-Conformists.

Her maiden name was BATSTONE or BALSTONE by the look of it. Birth registered as Ellen Orpha BATSTONE, Sep qtr 1857, Chard, 5c 471

There is an Ellen BATSTONE marriage in 1887, but there is only one grooms name. Can't see either name anywhere else, so it is possible they never married, but lived together as husband and wife. It did happen in those times.

Ian C

Thanks for this info, Ian.  I think it's becoming fairly obvious that they were not married...
