Barque "Amelia" from St John New Brunswick
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 15:50 BST (UK) »
I have a little clue that the "Amelia was a "Self-Possessed Immigrant Ship" owned by passengers on board from St John to Melbourne arriving 24th December 1852. Also another ship owned the same way was the "Australia" arriving early December 1852. She had cargo on board to sell etc and was put up for sale or charter within a week or so.

My interest is a family on board called Irvin that was actually Irving. The name Amelia became a family name for some of the females and stories tell of them sailing it to Australia and selling it.

Where there was a little smoke some of my research is starting to fit.

Anyone heard of this sort of thing before???

has, if you search "New Brunswick Newspaper Vital Statistics" in the full text for "Barque Amelia", a list of passengers aboard her. The name "Irvine" appears.

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/amelia1852.htm
 - interestingly some of the names different from what's listed here.

The marriage of Hugh Irvine to Mrs Maria Bonner appears in 1849 as well on the Newspaper vital statistics.  If you search for Hugh Irvine there is also a story from 1890 regarding the adventures of James McCorkle, who mentions his trip to Australia in the Amelia, with "Hugh Irvine, the ship builder, and his family".

There seems to be a fair bit of info about Hugh Irvine the ship-builder of St. Johns around, under that spelling with the e.

Other ships built by Hugh Irvine
The GLENLYON, a ship of 909 tons, was built in Saint John New Brunswick, by Hugh Irvine and his brothers (?). She was launched in August 1841, and registered in November 1841, at first by R.D. Wilmot, and later in the month by Stephen and Augustus Wiggins. Sold by the latter firm to London owners.

(heehee) Maybe it's why the name was eventually changed to Irving!
Just kidding, but the name does get twisted...Hubbies got some and they were Ervine, Ervin then Erwin. Go figure...

He has the name written all ways on his documents..but  I have him as being Hugh Mair Irvine/Irving and that has been my biggest problem. I have found more by looking for the "Amelia"
