Hi everyone

I have thought that he could have been born outside of Staffs and have tried to find him on the other sites, including bastardy records but, so far, no joy.

If I could just pinpoint his place of birth I could send for his birth certificate which would at least give me his mothers name.

What you know about your William PEPPITT bn 1859 born ?

He married Emma BAILEY 1882 Wellington

As Evie asked
What was his residence on marriage certificate and
What was his occupation in 1882, What was Emma's father's name
added THOMAS

1891 & 1901 census  from CaroleW
William PIPPETT bn 1859 Hanely, Iron Forge man, his wife
Emma bn 1861 Hanley
Children names
William 1883
Lizzie (Elizabeth) 1887
Job 1889
Hannah 1892
Joshua 1894
Rose 1900

Have you checked the  1911 census Stoke on Trent area, this would give you another option to check his place of birth Did William PEPPITT bn 1859 have a middle name ? H Yy (Henry) ?    :-\

I think this could be Emma Bailey in 1881 with her widowed mother?

1881c RG11/2719/50/37 44 West Street, Stoke on Trent
Head Joshua Hughes Widow
Hannah BAILEY Widow  age 46 born Hanley House Keeper
EMMA BAILEY dau. age 19 born Hanley Potters Spur Maker

I’m wondering if we can find a link too William PEPPITT by the naming patterns of his children

First son named William (after him)
First daughter Lizzie (Elizabeth) (could this have been his mother’s name)  :-\
Second son Job
Second daughter Hannah (after Emma’s mother perhaps)  :-\
Third son Joshua (see 1881 census Hannah & Emma)

What do you or anyone else  think - is this theory a possibility  :-\

Hi Ladyhawk

Your theory is a good possibility, thank you for summarising what we know :) but until we get the details from his marriage certificate I believe we are looking for a needle in a haystack

Hi Evie,

Agree it's like 'looking for a needle in a haystack '
so the need of address from marriage certificate would be helpful,
it's a shame the IGI extracted record 24/12/1882 Wellington only gives their date & names William PEPPITT Emma BAILEY.

Have just checked familysearch pilot there's a little more info., now know Emma's father is Thomas BAILEY - so the 1871 census with Job & Hannah as parents of Emma are incorrect so the theory that children's named after parents may be in doubt   :-\

William PEPPITT born 1859 age 23 father not named
Emma BAILEY born 1861 age 21 father Thomas
married 24/12/1882 Wellington, Stafford

Will edit my post/remove 1871 census as not too cause confusion.

One other theory I had what if William's mother married when he was very young and she gave him the surname of her husband ?/PEPPITT, he could have been baptized under another surname   ???

Yes I was thinking that his birth was registered under a different name - but why can't we see him in 1861, 1871 and 1881 under Peppitt. If he had gone back to his birth name at any point I wouldn't think he would marry under the name Peppitt - would you?

Well done for finding Emma's father's name

Hi Evie,

It is really strange that William can't be found on 1861, 1871 & 1881 censuses

While we wait for Peppitts-Benistons (Jane) to reply regarding William’s address in 1882.
Not much help really but it appears that at least Emma is from Stoke on Trent area

marriage from FreeBMD
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Thomas BAILEY name on same page
Anna STREET
Sep q 1853 Stoke on Trent

Birth from Stafford BMD
http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk

Year 1861 BAILEY Emma Sub dist. Shelton Registered Stoke on Trent
Mothers maiden name STREET

Checked for birth for William using soundex PEPPITT four  years either side 1859 but unfortunately no matches came up, even checked using just forename of William

Then checked births West Midlands BMD, using same principal as above
http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk

only came up with these two

1858 POPPETT William sub district Rowley Registers at. Sandwell Register Office
(this William parents I believe are George & Mary A HETHRINGTON - marriage 1853 Dudley)

1860 PIPPETT William sd West Bromwich Sth. West  Registers Sandwell

I don’t know how up to date these sites are though

So it’s possible he was not born in Stafford (Hanley) even though this is what is noted  on 1891 & 1901 census.

His  birth year of 1859 seems to be consistent, as for his surname PEPPITT this seems to have numeous spellings

Here’s  two links which may be of interest

Hi everyone
Thanks for having such a good look for me. On the marriage cerificate for William and Emma their address is simply given as Wellington, which is a parish in the County of Stafford. Emmas father is Thomas. I have found a number of Emma Baileys with the father as Thomas in the county of Staffs so need more infor for that. In the 1911 census there is a William H Yy Peppitt - a brother-in-law of John Jones and therefore the brother of Emma Jones nee Peppitt. He is a General Labourer and is shown as being married. I have decided to trace his sister if possible, she is a couple of years older than him and they both are down as being born in Hanley. Strangely a large chunk of the Peppitt family remains in and around Hanley to this day and I am wondering if William eventually ended up being buried in Hanley graveyard, which would be strange as my husband was born in a house overlooking the same graveyard.
Thanks again for your efforts
Jane :)

Hi again
my mistake, John Thomas Jones is the son of Emma Jones, who I believe is Williams sister. On Williams marriage certificate there is a Henry Jones as one of the witnesses so I believe he was indeed Emmas husband. I have tried to find a marriage for Emma and Henry but, so far, no luck. :(

I was wondering about the marriage

The only marriage coming up for
Emma PEPPITT is in 1908 Stoke on Trent and she married Charles DEAKIN

As John Thomas JONES was born 1883, her marriage would be sometime before that, can't see anything yet - you can roughly work out when from 1911 census

If you do find her marriage and you order this certificate it may confirm whether there was indeed father. It would be so much easier if they could put father unknown & add the mothers name.

Had a quick look can't see Emma on censuses as PEPPITT but as you said before there are many combinations of the name, so it could easily be a badly transcribed entry  but a least you now know he had a sibling

This may be Emma and husband Henry JONES you would need to check original as it has the two children transcribed as grand dau/son  :-\

1881 RG11/2718/94/7
51 Wells Street, Stoke on Trent

Henry JONES age 27 (1854) Hanley Stafford Colliers Banksman
Emma age 26 (1855) Hanley
Sarah Ann Jones g/dau age 5 (1876) Hanley
David Jones g/son age 10 days (1881) Hanley

Edited
Henry's mother Sarah Ann living with them, so this explains
