Mathew + Spedding in Appleby
« on: Wednesday 11 August 10 09:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could I beg a records office lookup, please?  I would like to know the exact wording of the marriage between John Mathew and Elizabeth Spedding on 15th November 1774 at St Lawrence's, Appleby.

Best wishes,
Jackie

I haven't got access to the parish records but there is a marriage licence record for this couple:

12 Nov 1774
groom: John Matthew, Curthwaite, parish Westward
bride: Eliz Spedding, Appleby parish St Lawrence
affidavit only

marriage to take place at St Lawrence, Appleby

No details given of occupation etc but hope it helps.
regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah,

Thanks for that.  I was hoping there might be some information on their parents or  Elizabeth's origins.  This marriage puts a bit of a spanner in the works because my John Matthews is from Curthwaite, Westward and there are Speddings in the same place.  However, there are Speddings in Appleby too so ... where to go from here...   ???

Best wishes and thanks,
Jackie

Yes - it was a bit of a disappointing entry.

But the two places are quite a distance apart.  Do you think that the Speddings in the two places are related?  Do you want me to look for other Spedding licences from around the same time?
regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
Yes, opposite ends of Cumbria and my branches tended not to move around a lot.  I've had the films for Westward and surrounding parishes and there's no marriage there so it does tend to add more credence to this Appleby marriage.  I think there'd have to be a connection with the two Spedding branches - it's the only way I can think of John and Elizabeth meeting up, if Appleby Elizabeth perhaps went up to visit Curthwaite Speddings.
There's quite a time-gap between this marriage and the children being born in Westward - so it does beg the question if they might have lived down there for a while and had earlier children.

I'd be really grateful if you have chance to look at other Spedding licences.

Best wishes,
Jackie
