Royal Hospital - HELP PLEASE
« on: Tuesday 25 May 04 10:48 BST (UK) »
I have an anestor whose address in 1805 was ".. Royal Hospital, Greenwich, Kent..".  Today I found his probate and it states: "..late of the Royal Hospital, Greenwich in the County of Kent, a lieutenant in the Royal Navy ..."  also his wife address is the same.

Does anyone know what this hospital is?  I thought he may have been employed there - maybe he was and was a naval Doctor.  I don't know.

Also, what is a workhouse? Please.

Thanks

Reg

Hospital is a BIG place, sometime known as Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital. Right by Greenwich Park/Greenwich Royal Observatory/National Maritime Museum.

Should be easy to spot on a map, it's on the riverside.

FYI: a workhouse is a parish-provided instituition to provide relief (bed and board) for the very poorest of the parish. Not usually where you would choose to go.

Hi Reg
The ref below is how the hospital was titled for the 1861 census, it seems as though they took in paying guests, or maybe had staff residences.

Royal Hospital (including private residences), Greenwich, GREENWICH [1861]
