Lincoln Workhouse census 1841-51
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 13:15 BST (UK) »
Probably being thick here but I'm trying to find the census records for the above workhouse for years 1841 and 1851. It was sited in Burton Road Lincoln, which I've found on both census' but I cant find the workhouse records themselves. 6a Burton Road was the address. I've gone both sides of the census pages but no luck. Any ideas anyone.....please

Hi Tony,
According to the 1840 Census Act the "master or keeper......of every public or charitable institution which shall be determined upon by the said (census) commissioners, shall act as the enumerator of the inmates thereof" From 1851 special institutional books were sent to Institutions that had more than 200 inmates (reduced to 100 in 1891) , these books were forwarded to the Census Office separately from the household returns.

Thanks again, my great grand-dad was born in the workhouse in 1854, his mother Elizabeth Martin is named on the birth certificate, but no father is listed. I cant get back any further on the Martin side, I'm of to the soc of geneaologists here in london next week to look at admission entries for that time, no idea if she was a young unmarried mother.
Thanks again for your help
Tony
