Martin Family
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 15:08 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to get info on Elizabeth Martin, she gave birth to William Martin in the Lincoln Union Workhouse on 15 June 1854. I can find no trace of her before then. I am assuming that she was an unmarried mother as there is no father listed on William ( my great grandfather)  but I could be wrong. I have searched census and parish records before and after but no luck so far. My family tree would virtually be complete if I could trace her back.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know what happens to William? Have you got him on subsequent censuses? Is he with his mother? If so, what else can you glean about her? If not, who brings him up?
Presumably you have some more info, to know that this birth of this William Martin, is the right person who grew up to be your gr grandfather - does that give any more clues?

I have traced the Martin line from William to the present through census, mariage and  parish records but cannot trace his mother, I am going to the Soc of Geanaologists today to look at workhouse registers so hopefully will be able to glean more. Will keep you posted.

Could be offbeam but....

In 1861 William Martin  born Lincoln resident with William Hall and Ann his wife in Middle Rasen. Noted as Nephew.

On 1 May 1850 in Faldingworth William Hall married Ann Martin dauughter of William

Ann Hall nee Martin born Sixhills circa 1827.

On IGI

William Martin and Lucy his wife had the following children baptised
Ann           1826        ELIZABETH 1829   Thomas  1818
Robert       1828        John   1819           Lucy 1825
Henry         1822 died 1822      William  1823

Probably Mary 1814 Gayton le Wold and Sarah 1816 at Hainton and buried at Sixhills in 1819 and Susanna 1832 Middle Rasen Drax.

On 5th July 1813 a William Martin married a Lucy Gray in Middle Rasen Drax
On 7 Jan 1835 a Lucy Martin was buried at the same place age 46.

I think that Elizabeth married John Gibbons Hoyes son of John 2 Dec 1863 at Faldingworth.

I think William was b 1792 at Snarford son of Thomas and Dorothy (Probably Cottngham m.1781 at Welton. I think William also married an Elizabeth b 1799 d 1859 and Lucy widow Foster nee Ashton 18 Jan 1864 and that he was buried at Faldingworth 16 Aug 1883.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for information, The William Martin nephew is my grt grt grandad, he was born in Lincoln workhouse in 1854, I have found his christening poor house record. The Ann Martin info would certainly tie in. Thank you so much for that I will do some more digging now.
