« on: Friday 13 August 10 10:09 BST (UK) »
Can someone please assist in identifying this medal?
It was found in a box containing WW1 medals and artifacts belonging to someone who was a member of the Manchester Militia in the 1840/50s.It is covered in verdigris.May be brass.
The ribbon is black silk.

Wyatt and Wood of Glossop, Derbyshire. Longstaff of Bishop Auckland,Durham. Harry of St Austell and St Kew,Cornwall. Charters of County Antrim.Knight of Warwickshire.Hendy of Ballyedmonduff.

Thank you Still_looking.
So you suggest the medal might be Grecian.
I understand the medal is not flat on the back.It is hollowed out to match the relief on the front.
Any further suggestions please?

Does the black ribbon have any significance?

When I originally mentioned Marianne the implication was that it was French. However it clearly isn't Marianne so you can dismiss that.

The all black ribbon would suggest something like mourning (or possibly that the person only had black ribbon to hand). Most medal ribbons that I've seen tend to be a mixture of colours.

The hollow on the back matching the front would sugegst to me that it was either cheaply produced or not originally intended for use as a medal. Maybe something peculiar to the militia produced on limited funds?
