Flouncylicious.

I also have also found the same info as Hanes Teulu which was taken from the Western Mail on August 10 1908, giving biographical details of James Hurman who was quite influential in the early days of Cardiff docks and railways. Like Hanes I to am lacking PC skills. If Hanes does not complete I will attempt.

Regards.

Cardiff the info was absolutely excellent ;D I'm sitting here grinning from ear to ear  ;D

This one article has categorically verified just about everything I have researched about this man and his family, and also gave me more information on his children and how he climbed the ranks from railway clerk to one of the most important men in Cardiff. An amazing insight into this man's life. There is so much information I've gone giddy!! ;D ;D

A piece that really made me smile was the references made to his upbringing in Appledore Devon. It says that he was educated by his father, a schoolteacher and that the whole family had moved to Cardiff in 1850. What is not written and I'm sure was not known at the time by the people around him was that the reason his family had moved to Cardiff was that his father the schoolteacher had stolen money from at least two institutions he was overseer for (monetary equivalent today at least 50k!!). This meant the his father ended up in Devon County Goal and the family fled to Cardiff!! You can imagine the scandal and the shame made their position in Appledore untenable.

Once again thank you to everyone who has helped me in this quest, especially Hanes who I cannot thank enough.

New to list - great discovery.  I'm trying to trace the first world war career of my grandfather John Anthony (Jack) Saunders.  He was apparently one of the first to enlist in Cardiff and there was an article about him in the Echo.  The article would have appeared on Aug 4, 5th or 6th, 1914 as he was at the enlistment office on the first morning.  Is there a way to check the Echo for the article?
While on parade for training, I think Aldershot, he was made a Corporal on the Field by Lord Kitchener.  Is there any way I could get any info about this?
I'm from Cardiff, but now live in Canada, so accessing info is difficult!
Thank you
Wendy

Hi Wendy

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

We can leave your post here in case locals can help but I would also suggest that you post the latter part of your question (Lord Kitchener bit) on the Armed Forces board of Rootschat, where the experts live!

Don't forget to update this thread if they find some answers as this will prevent duplication of effort.  Thanks.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
