« on: Saturday 14 August 10 04:29 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Have a scanned copy of a 1892 ( 12 Feb 1892)  NZ birth certificate for a Lydia Norma Theresa VOULLAIRE it gives her birth place as New Hebrides.
Birth was registered in Wellington 11 Feb 1893
A note at the side has Births 1/4 31 March 1892 Wellington
Is is a name of a Ship  where she may have been born on ?

Regards

Hi Kiwi-terrier,

The new Hebrides are now known as Vanuatu,VOULLAIRE  is a french name and the French and British colonised the New Hebrides in the 18th century.
Could she have been born there and registered here, odd I know

Hi Terrier

The note on the side will be bureaucrat speak for "Births Quarter ending 31 March 1892" Probably born on an NZ registered ship in the vicinity of the New Hebrides. Hence NZ registration.

Hi

Mmm ... just have to disagree a little with Alan.   :D

I would say that the (Territory of) New Hebrides was in fact her birth place.    If born on a vessel, then the words "At Sea" would also have been noted on the birth registration.

Were the parents perhaps missionaries in the New Hebrides ?

At the time of the birth registration the New Hebrides were jointly administered by the French and the British.  Due to the fact that Australia was left out of the negotiations which set up this joint administration, and took umbrage, some of the British side was done from New Zealand even though it was further away.  Presumably one of the results was that British births were registered in New Zealand.

Thanks David. That makes sense of the reference to the March Quarter. British births are registered in quarters, New Zealnd births are annual.

Hi there,

I would not have expected this birth to have been registered anywhere in Australia, for those six colonies were not federated into one colony until 1901, so while BDM events via civil registration started 1856, that civil registration also saw the ceasation of the practice of parish records being transmitted quarterly from South Seas Islands to NSW head churches.....    I would have expected this birth to be registered either under the colonial processes in the New Hebrides or in NZ ...   I would also expect there are other bdm events that occurred in the New Hebrides to have been registered in NZ.

I'm not sure what the French admin processes were although  I understand that in the 1890's France and England were still dithering over how to administer their shared colony (not formally organised until 1906 perhaps with the buildup of German industrial  & colonial issues ... New Guinea et al), so that may explain the NZ registration.  At one stage around the mid 1890's there were negotiations re French /English shared responsibilities between those two colonial powers which were adjudicated by the Spanish...

Cheers,  JM
