Mathias Dowding Sturminster Newton 1817
« on: Saturday 14 August 10 16:06 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace back the parentage of Mathias dowding who married Mary davis on 18th June 1817 at Sturminster newton - they had a son, also called mathias, baptised 3rd August 1824- but I am trying to trace back the line of Mathias who married in 1817.

All contributions gratefully received!

Hi,

Can you find Mathias on any census?  Does he show Sturminster Newton as his birthplace?

The Dorset OPC site for Sturminster Newton lists 5 other baptisms for children of Mathias and Mary;  Mary Anne (1818), John (1819), James (1820), Thomas (1821) and Christian (1823).

Yes - I think he is on the 1841 Census, living at Fiddleford with William Dibben - his father in law. Ther are already postings that show he married Mary Davis Sturminster Newton in 1817 and had the children you mention. He then remarried as a widower to Elizabeth Dibben in 1829 in Sturminster Newton and they had 6 further children.

I am curious to see if there is any way I can trace back on Dorset OPc somewher to find out about his baptism/birth -= preumably c 1790 and his parents.

Long shot I know!!

You can do a "general search" on the Dorset OPC site;  good luck!

Mathias' father Mathias is a direct ancestor of mine.  I think he was born in 1788 in Cucklington, Somerset.  I have some dates for early Dowdings in Cucklington that I have yet to look at.

Hi Chris- this is going to sound really bad but my computer was hacked just after I posted this message and I cannot recall which line of enquiry resulted in my question! I am doing research for several strands of my family! Is it too cheeky to ask for details of mathias Dowding's direct line through the 1800s which may give me a clue! Really sorry to have to ask this but the hacker has left my files a bit disrupted!
Many thanks
