Help with 1861 census please.Unable to find them
« on: Saturday 14 August 10 20:13 BST (UK) »
Can someone please tell me if it is possible to find an address in the 1861 census.

I have a couple marrying in Bethnal Green in 1859, 1 at 12 Brick Lane and the other at 4 John Street.
I cant find them in the 1861 census and was wondering who lived at these addresses 2 years after they married.

Many Thanks

Hi

In 1861 at 12 Brick Lane there are 3 households named Milen, Townsend and Roskell.    At 4 John Street again 3 households - Sherd, Jameson and Godfrey.

I have searched the 1861 census for this pair that were married in 1859,but with no luck.

Can someone please see if they can spot them,

Martin Nauman and Julia Curten were married 1859 at St James the Less Bethnal Green.
Their first child was born in abt 1860 in St George in the East.

Martin born Germany and Julia Ireland, this from the 1871 census where they are down as Roman.( the family were known as Norman) later on.

I think this must have come about because it was put down as it sounded.

Many thanks

Thank you Jennifer for looking for me.

On the 1871 census (down as ROMAN) there is

Margret born 1859
Thomas  " "    1860
Rose       " "   1864
Martin     "  "  1869

Thank you for finding Julia...but she is not with them in the 1871 census. But I think she must be mine,as Martin was a baker, and the names are right for her parents.

Can't see them in 1861, but there are some parts of London missing for that year.

1881
District Hackney Union Infirmary
Martin NÄUMANN, Patient widr 44, Baker, born Germany
RG11/310/88/3

Looks like there were two Martin NÄUMANN/NEWMAN/NORMANs as in 1881, there is a Martin married to an Elizabeth. He was a similar age, a baker and also born Germany.

Martin jnr was at school in 1881, and ended up a fisherman in Grimsby, Lincs, i am guessing.
