thanks for the reply sandra,

Thomas Barrons (Barron, Banon) was born to parents Matthew Barrons and mother Mary ?Flinn, about 1854 in Scotland.  Jane McNab was born to Michael McNab and Helen Mulvey (Mulvie), about 1860, in Glasgow Scotland.  (Jane's vague birth details from Michael McNab's application for "Poor Relief" in Glasgow in 1884).  Thomas (oilwork clerk) and Jane married on 4th May 1879 in Glasgow.  8 February 1880 their first child John was born in Glasgow. (Thomas occupation now "seedcrusher").

1881 Glasgow census, Jane and 1 year old son John are boarding with another family in Glasgow, and it would appear that Thomas had already left for USA.  And if Charlie born in Brooklyn in May 1882, we should be able to find passenger lists?  We have "Barron, Barrons, Baron, Banon, Barns, Burns" ... and who knows how many other variations of spelling?

Sorry for not taking the time to reread the posts again, but when is the first time you've found the Barrons family on American census, please?

So far, I've not found a WWI draft reg for little Charlie; continuing to look around for him on other records.

I don't think the item needs to be found on familysearch.org in order for you to order a copy of it.  I don't think all their microfilm has been transcribed to their site.

The death certificate number for Jane Barron from 1892 is 25172.  In the Family History Library catalog, under New York, New York (City), there is microfilm entitled "Manhattan death certificates, 1866-1919 ; index, 1868-1890 : Works Projects Administration, project no. 265-1-97-28; Work project no. 1".  The microfilm for "Certificates no. 22901-25400 1892" is FHL US/CAN Film 1322842.  If you put that information onto the form I linked to above, you should be able to order Jane's death certificate, although the catalog does warn that some of these records are light and hard to read.

Hi Lisa and Shelley,

Am struggling to find US census entries for this family - wonder if the variations on the name are part of the problem -.....  Interestingly when Jane McNab's father Michael was admitted to the Poor House in Glasgow in 1884, he gave his daughters husbands name ("In America, with husband and 1 child") as Patrick Burns, on one page, and Patrick Barns on another.... and it turned out it was in fact "Thomas Barrons" - we have marriage entry of "Jane McNab, Thomas Barrons" to prove it !  "Burns, Barns", - haven't concentrated on them really on the American records yet - so many... and then all I need is to start hitting the "Browns" lol!!!  Maybe if we find the Passenger lists - ?? might clarify spelling further?  Thanks for that Info re the Death entry for Jane Barrons, Shelley - I think i will do my best to get that death cert.

Hello Maggs,

Like you I have spent sometime going through combinations and using variants but got absolutely nothing on Census and passenger lists.  Found a Jane Barron, married and travelling 21 July 1881 on the State of Florida from Glasgow but she was aged 26 years, had no son or husband with her.  Thought Charlie would give us another chance with census or Military but nothing suitable for him either.

Have you tries the e-mail links in the earlier reply, someone else is getting a response from them.

Regards
Sandra  :o

I also am not finding little John on the passenger lists.  (There is a John Bonar? on the Canadian immigration list, born c1881, arriving 1882.  Otherwise, nothing.)

Hi Sandra,

This one is really tough. Looking at the oldest son John Barrons, -  I have found a "John Burns" in the 1920 census, in Fishkill New York - he and both parents born in Scotland.  Interestingly, it is 1920, he is age 40, and yet in the column where it asks when he migrated to US, it says 1879 !!  before birth???  Our John Barrons was actually born in Glasgow on 8 February 1880, birth registered by his mother - (not father), ...

Could it be that the the Father Thomas Barrons, having married Jane McNab in May 1879, then migrated to US, leaving his pregnant wife in Glasgow - child John Barrons born in Feb. 1880, - wife and child join him sometime between Feb. 1880 - and August 1881 - in time for wife to get pregnant again, and give birth to second son Charlie in May 1882?  And in later years older son John Barrons (Burns?) - gives his arrival in US as 1879 - being the year when "family=father" migrated?

Is this story too far fetched?  It is easy to "fabbricate" a story... but is that all it is?
