Thanks Genie, that's sheer brilliamce.

I can get over there one day next week, so I'll see what's available.

Thanks again, Genie.

OK, you will need to ring first to book an appointment. They do not usually let you go on speck.

What amazes me is that most parish registers are available for the public to search and view at County Records Offices and generally you can print a page for a mere 50p.  That, at least, has been my experience thus far!

That's been my experience at Birmingham Library too.  I've searched and printed from St Philip's registers on microfilm there.  Has something changed?  ???  because I hope to return there before long and was planning to search St Philip's again for something else.

This is Keitht's post from earlier in the thread

"I tried to get your parish record entry this morning (along with the one I wanted) but if there is a way to make things complicated our library will find it.

Apparently you have to send in a written or e-mailed request, together with a cheque (not sure how you e-mail a cheque) and they will trouble themselves to sort out the entry some time within the next 20 working days. My belief that I could simply ask and I would receive was met with blank incredulity."

SG - if you do go again and its as you found it before would you have a look for my entry please?

You can still sit there and read the microfiche. Unfortunately I didn't have the time yesterday morning. I ended up having to run to beat the parking meter as it was.

The real problem with the microfiche is that in many cases they are all but indecipherable. In those days most people wrote with quills. I reckon the guys who filled in those parish records used telegraph poles.
