George Johnson
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 14:28 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out about my paternal grandfather George Johnson, I believe his full name may have been George Henry Johnson. The only things I know about him are that in 1926 he was married to Ellen Billington (died 4th August that year whilst giving birth to my father), that his occupation was given as "Motor Lorry Driver(General0", and that at the time of my fathers birth in 1926 he was living at 6 Bird St, Ardwick, Manchester M8 (the location of which is now a childrens playground off viaduct st.
for some reason my fahter and his family were not on speaking terms, I vaguely remember as a child in the late 60's visiting someone I think was my grandfather, he was at that time living in a pre-fab house (and for some reason I think it may have been over near Wythenshaw hospital, though i have no idea where I get this from).

I do know my father was in contact with someone from his family, as I contacted a gentleman in 1995 when my father died (got the name from his address book) who claimed to be his cousin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

She married as Nellie

George H Johnson / Nellie Billington September qtr 1922  Manchester
Volume   8d Page  490

The marriage cannot be looked up in parish records as it was either a Catholic or a Civil marriage so no church is shown

www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

It would be a good starting point to get a copy of the marriage cert to see his age and his fathers name

You don't mention the name of your father but
George Johnson born 4 Aug 1926 Manchester South died Sep Q 1995 Stockport.
Marriage 1922 at Manchester Reg Office or Catholic Church as shown  RA
George H Johnson and Nellie Billington..
There are a few Johnson / Billington births but there was one in Chorlton in 1923 that could be the same family.
If this marriage is the right one then they should be on the 1911 census

My father was the one born on 4/8/26.
I know something of Ellen\Nellie's life, in 1901 she was in the poor law shool in swinton, where she seems to have gone after her father william billington tried to kill his wife 2 years earlier. After that until the marriage in 1922 I have no information.  Her brother (also called William) surfaces in 1925 when he kills his wife and kids.

George Henry Johnson I have no information on either pre the wedding in 1922 or post the death of his wife in 1926.

Hi

With Johnson being quite a common surname, there are a number of George Henry Johnson births that may be his - but that assumes that his middle name was definitely Henry and not Herbert or Harold

Ellen was 29 when she died so was born around 1897 and in Lancashire alone there are a few possible George Henry Johnson births  plus a George Herbert b Rochdale

You really need to buy a copy of the 1922 marriage cert
