Photo date-1850's?
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 15:30 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I've just been sent a CD of 11 family portraits. I'm hoping they're from a branch of my family who went to Australia in 1852.

I'd be grateful for any help on a possible date.
Thanks
Caro

The gathered waist and dropped shoulders of the dress are an early 1850s style. It's going to be a glass photo, an ambrotype, or possibly even a daguerreotype. Wonderful photo.

If you would like a restore, it should be larger. Do you know at what resolution the original was scanned at?

Cheers,

What a beautiful photo  :)  I agree with China on the date, and can confirm that it's an ambrotype (on glass).  It's in lovely condition  :)

Hey Caroline, hope you don't mind me adding to your thread   ;D

I am helping Caroline try to identify this lady, as we hope she is from my family, who left England for Victoria in the early 1850's.

Does anyone have a guess for what age she is?

I'd love an unbiased opinion as to her age......as left to my own devices, I imagine I will convince myself that she is the right age for my rellie!!!!

So no clues  ;)

It's kind of small to see her face, is there a larger scan available?

I'd say maybe 60ish...women had hard lives and aged quickly in those days. No Pond's either :)

The lady looks in her 50's or possibly early 60's.Being an Ambrotype this is in reverse, this is her as she was at the sitting.

Thanks for your comments China,Prue and Jim.

I'm interested that you say that ambrotypes give a reverse image. If I understand correctly, this means that this lady is not wearing a wedding ring? I had assumed it was hidden under the posy of flowers she is holding.

The lady in question is either the wife or sister of Christopher Porter, who took his family to Australia in 1852, his unmarried sister Ann went with them.

I'm uploading the picture of Christopher, so a further question for you all, do you think they could be brother and sister?

I agree their chins and mouths do look very similar.

Here's an enlarged close up of Jane/Ann's face.

Thanks for looking
