McAuley Family - Dublin
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 20:43 BST (UK) »
I'm investigating my Grandfathers family....'McAuley'

Here's all the information I have...and I'm not sure where or what to do next.....

My grandfathers name was ' Dermot Francis Mathew McAuley' he was one of 16 children. (My grandfather is the left man in picture 1)

I'm not sure of his Birthdate...I know its late September...and its between 1924-1926...As he was around 76/78yrs old when he died in 21st December 2003.

He was a trainee Priest for the Catholic church. He came to England and met my grandmother whom he left the church for and became a Carpenter. He done some time in the RAF too, but not abroad. He also had a trade a cobbler.

Unfortunately my grandmother left him and remarried. Her name was 'June Blossom Bruce' She was born 12th June 1936 and Died 6th March 2004.
My grandfather then left my grandmother and had hardly any contact since then until he died. (ironically the two were not together for over 25yrs and died within 6 months of each other, and my Grandmother was a bit younger than him)

Details I have:

16 Brothers and Sisters...Born to....???????

Only siblings I know are:
    SON: Dermot (Mac) my Grandad
    SON: Mathew (Mattie)
    SON: William (Billy)...
    SON: Francis
    DAUGHTER: Essie
[/b]
So thats 5 down, 11 left to trace names of...
(ive seen many childrens graves on the cemetery listings around the 1900-1930 range so I assume some of the 16 siblings never made it past childgood.)

I do know one of the brothers was a suitmaker/dressmaker....as he used to make my grandfather suits and coats...

They all grew up above a Pub at 108 Marleborough Street, Dublin.

Mattie McAuley (middle man of picture no 1)
So far Ive searched graveyards...and finally found Matties listing and his wife's Brigit. (both dead now and at Glasnevin Cemetery).http://www.interment.net/data/ireland/dublin/glasnevin/m/glasn_m02.htm

Billy McAuley (right man in picture 1 and left in picture 2)
Married Stella and Had 2 sons that I know of...Noel (right man in picture 2) and Richard (who died).
I know Billy died...This is the one gravestone I desperately need to find, as My mother and I thought long and hard as to where to spread my grandfathers ashes, as he was cremated.. And he was very close to his brother Billy....so I hope to find his grave to spread my grandfather near.

Essie Kavanagh (nee McAuley)
Married a man called Kavanagh? or Cavanagh....had a son and daughter called Murtagh Cavanagh (whom aparently done a Eulogy at my grandads funeral) and Olive Cavanagh (I met her at my grandfathers funeral, she lives in London somewhere, but I wasn't investigating the family then and didn't get her contact details)
Now Murtagh Cavanagh apparently worked for as a transport manager for Singers Clannad?
Also I think Essies family were based around Sheriff St Estate?

I'm going from Brighton, England to Dublin, Ireland in 2 days time to go to the cemeteries and to go to any pubs in the vicinity or churches to show pictures and ask around...

I wish I had come across this site earlier, As I need more information really but my flight is booked as its my birthday while I'm over there lol.

Any help would be much appreciated!

**I keep updating the information on this original post as well as replying as it helps me keep in check with the information im finding...***

From 1904 to at least 1938, no 108 Marlborough St is listed as 'John Ward, dining rooms'.

The address is at the junction with Abbey Street Lower.

I dont see a good match for Dermot's birth in Dublin around the years you mentioned. It's worth noting that middle names are not always included in the initial registration, and are sometimes added  later at baptism.

The address details come from various editions of Thom's directory.

In later years (1950s on) no. 108 Marlborough St was a pub called the Flowing Tide.

just wondering about the estimated year of birth you have mentioned...  if Dermott was 78 when he died in 2004, wouldn't that make his year of birth about 1926 ?

If the age is correct - then there is a possible index match for Dermot's birth :

 Name: Dermot McAuley
 Registration District: Dublin North
 Event Type: Birth
Quarter and Year: Jul - Sep 1925
 Volume : 2 /  Page : 361

Dublin North is the registration district which would include much of the north city centre, including Marlborough St.

Not sure what's at the address now..

And by a strange coincidence I think that's the same address that my GtGt-Grandmother gave on her marriage in 1877, the address was a small hotel at that time. The Pro-Cathedral (St. Mary's RC) is nearby, and also on Marlborough St.

WOW, I cant thank you enough for this help Shane....

Ive got the Ashes/Urn here now....The details are on there...Im just trying to figure how to search for them....

That possibly is him...I know he was a bit older than my other nan (fathers mother) who was born in 1932...cos she used to fancy him lol

Now i have:

Honor Oak Crematorium....
Crem no: 122546
Date: 14.01.04 <---Cremated on

Now I looked inside and found a peice of paper with the information above on it and this date....21/12/2003....Now If I can remember rightly (as i was a mess at the time)....He did die just before Christmas as his ex-wife (my nan) died in the March just after him...and everyone was shocked how close they had died...seeing as they were not married or together for over 30yrs.

It might be an idea to search for his marriage to your grandmother to confirm his details. A cert will give their father's name's and occupations. (would help confirm, or rule out, any births you find)

I not 100% certain which corner of the junction 108 is on, but one corner has been completely re-developed. As far as I can #108 was the Flowing Tide put up to the 1970s
