"Pembroke People" - worth buying?
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm researching my Phillips family that lived and worked in Pembroke Dock predominantly as Shipwrights between 1816 and 1850ish.  I'm tempted to buy a copy of Pembroke People by Richard Rose but at £65 a copy it's pretty steep.  I wonder if anyone has a copy that they could look in for me to advise if any of my relatives are mentioned and to what degree before I decide whether to make the investment?

Many thanks,
Martin

Hi Milly,

Yes I have thanks - and it's tantalising but not quite enough to tell whether there's one of 'mine' in there or not!

Thanks again,
Martin

Since the Author also contributes to this forum, he will be the best to advise.

I.M.H.O. if you want one surname in a very limited 40 to 50 year period then 'no', a loan from the library is best.
If one wants a very deep research tool (like me) to add to my own research which covers a far greater period of the area, but by no means anywhere near as concentrated then 'yes'
In your case like my own interest in the Oriel's ~ get it soonest and with luck your descendents will gain an interest in their ancestors from reading such an impressive researched volume.

Hi Orielbenfro,

I pondered it a bit more and decided to indulge myself!   ;)   Just ordered the last copy at Amazon...   ;D

Well I only just received the book today - but even after a cursory glance I can see why it costs as much as it does.  It's packed!  Looks like it will be pretty useful.   :)

There is certainly plenty of info in it but if you are only doing your own family history you may find that they are only mentioned once or twice.

Living in PD I found it fascinating  reading up about all the old shops that are no longer here.
