A crash course in Latin?
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 20:24 BST (UK) »
A trip to my local records office resulted in a bit of embarrasment recently, as records for the early 1600's were all completed by the officiating minister in Latin.

My knowledge of Latin is almost non existent. The only words I know are:

Henrici - Henry
Guillemus - William
Secondus - Second

I wouldnt know these if I hadnt collected old coins as a kid. Does anyone know any sites for brushing up a bit?

David.
Northants - Stevenson, Smith, Spriggs, Hight, Dodson, Coleman
Swansea - Thomas, Williams, Howell, David, Rees, Griffiths, Jenkins, Bevan
Rutland - Hales
Derbyshire - Harlow, Riley, Pemberton, Aldred
Yorkshire - Stamper, Boyes, Duke
London - Harper, Wallis
Essex - Shelford, Wallis, Read, Stanes
Hertfordshire - Bishop
Cornwall - Johns, Soper, Rowe, Ball, Webb, Dunn, Quintrell, Hain, Oliver
Gloucestershire - Harper, Ash, Gregory, Denman
County Durham - Proud, Duke
Yorkshire - Stamper, Pickering

Not a website but a download of a text called Parish Register Latin from the internet archive courtesy of the Mormons

Enjoy!

There are beginners' and advanced tutorials on The National Archives site, and help with old handwriting too
