Henry Chard
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 21:46 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I am hoping to find more info on Henry Chard.
I believe he was born in 1816 in Ireland and died on the 25th of January 1879 in Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom.
I know he married Ann Venn on the 10th July 1836 (Aged 20) in Shinfield Berkshire.

I do not know where he was born in Ireland, who his parents were and why he came to England.  ???

I am doing my family history with my dad and we have discovered that Henry was related to my great grandmother

Any Information would be helpful

Dominic

Hi Obbie

Thank you for getting back to me.

There is some additional information but its not absolute and possibly a little confusing. ???

Henry does record on various census that he was born in Ireland, it may be possible that he was actually baptised in Reading.

There was a baptism at St Giles on 27th April 1817. This shows his parents unfortunatly also were called Henry and Ann. We believe that he had a sister called Arabella who married Mathew Brewerton in 1835. Although his surname may of been Brown as shown on the original index

In 1841 We believe his mother Ann was living a few doors Away from him.

In 1851 there was a Thomas Chard receiving parish relief formally Cooper born Devon Taunton.

Chard is not a common name in Berkshire and judging from the places of birth being given by Thomas and Ann (in 1851 she was 79 and stated that she was born in Uffington, Devon) the elder members of the family probably came from the South West of England.

This is supported by the fact that our Henry's wife Ann, was born in Stogumber, Somerset, England 1813

Hope this further information helps

Dominic

Welcome to the world of family history and well done getting back so far already

As previously stated Henry's marriage certificate should state his Father's name, presumably Henry,  and occupation and if lucky some other information that may help direct you.

If you look at the 1901 Irish census for Chard, at that time there were only 28 people with that name and they are living in Antrim, Dublin, Cork and Galway mainly with one person each in Down and Tipperary.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

If you look at the Griffiths Valuations of the mid 1800's there are eight people listed in Cork and Antrim

The www.Irish-Roots.ie site had records for the family name in several counties but again mainly in Antrim, Cork and Galway. There is a record for a baptism of Margaret Chard in Wicklow in 1814.

Without a near exact location finding out more will be difficult but if you can find out more about his father it may help. If Henry's Dad was in a profession/job that may have brought him to Ireland - it may be that Henry was born in Ireland during that period rather than the family originated there.

Best of luck in your research and think outside the box when searching.
