Horden Viaduct - death
« on: Sunday 03 April 05 21:38 BST (UK) »
Hi, my 2xG Grandfather, George Wright, was killed while walking across the railway viaduct in Horden. This would have been between 1920 and the early 1940's (I'm still trying to find his death cert so can't be more specific!)

His death was never discussed in the family as I think there were suggestions that he may have committed suicide rather than been killed in an accident.

Does anyone know what the local papers would have been for the Horden area around this time?

Also any suggestions for narrowing down the search for his death search would be much appreciated!! I have found a possible at the durham records online site, a burial in Easington district in 1933, George Edward Wright aged 65, but can't find a corresponding entry at 1837online!!!

Thank you
tabitha

Hi , There,

The local evening newspaper at that time was called the Northern Daily Mail....now called "The Mail "...It was printed in what was called West Hartlepool...now called Hartlepool...

I'm fairly sure that it would have given coverage to the event...hope this helps..

Sunderland Echo of 30 Jan 1942 tells of a George WRIGHT age 76 of Third St., Horden killed on the railway between Easington and Horden.
About a month earlier he had been living in 123 Meadow Rd, Exall, near Coventry.
He was killed on January 28

Hi Lyndyloo

Welcome to rootschat.  Tabitha has not been on here since 2009 and I see that their email address is no longer working.
