Thomas Huxtable
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 13:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any information on Thomas Huxtable, born Bethnal Green/Hackney in 1890/91.  He emigrated to Canada on board the SS Tunisian which left from Liverpool in 1904 bound for Quebec.  Thomas appears to have been travelling alone.

With thanks
Lesley

is it his parents / siblings you seek ?

1891 census of Hackney RG12; Piece: 195; Folio 142; Page 66 - 10, Jerusalem Gardens

Samuel Huxtable 36 Head of Household born Bethnal Green: a Coal Porter
Sarah Huxtable 38 Wife born Bethnal Green
Caroline Huxtable 10 dau ditto
Mary A Huxtable 5 dau ditto
Thomas Huxtable 5 months son born Hackney

something wrong with his quoted census age, as:-

Births Dec 1889

Huxtable  Thomas     Hackney  1b 543

By the time of the 1901 census of Hackney - RG13; Piece: 230; Folio: 6; Page: 3

Sarah is a Widow, and only the eldest daughter Caroline is with her.

I havent been able to see Thomas anywhere  :(

Ah, here he is:  1901 RG13; Piece: 1664; Folio: 99; Page: 9 Brentwood, Essex - The Hackney Union Training School

Thomas Huxtable aged 12 Student born Hackney

sounds like he went to Canada as part of one of those programmes which took youngsters out to the 'colonies' to work.

If you use Google, you can find out more about this Training School.

also it is documented within this site - use an internal search - http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

Thank you - I have now found out that Hackney Union Training School was part of the local workhouse, and that Thomas was indeed sent to Canada with a number of other children as part of the British Home Children scheme.   His destination was Stratford, Ontario and my next step is to find out what happened to him!

I'not au fait with the Canadian census, but I'm sure a new thread on the relevant Forum will find people who can help  :)

You are now on the Canada board, so don't make a new thread.
Here is Thomas's entry as a home child, part of the Macpherson group headed for Stratford, Ont. Don't see him there in 1911 ( or anywhere in Canada as yet) but he probably has moved on and even perhaps, married by then...will keep looking...Hopefully someone can find a marriage for him, or movement over borders...

link at bottom of page shows the other children in this particular party of children.
Mr. ( William H.) Merry seems to be superintendant at the home to which he was sent: "Annie's Home" or"Macpherson Home". He was nephew to Macpherson  http://www.rootschat.com/links/09j5/

There are multiple Canada Boards ......

I would have thought that the 'Lookups thread' might have been relevant?

Thank you!

I have found an Attestation Paper for Thomas Peter Huxtable into the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force, dated 25 September 1915.

His date of birth and next of kin fit, though he does state he was born in Brentwood rather than Hackney!!

Part of his battalion (the 71st) was amalgamated into the 54th Kootenay Canadian Infantry and, if he was amongst them, he most likely fought at the battle of the Somme in 1916.

I can see no records showing his death during the war and, as his Attestation Paper shows him as single, I guess the next step is to look for a marriage.

My grateful thanks
Lesley
