Unknown Characters in 1901 Column 17
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 23:34 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks

In the 1901 census image I have, in column 17 which is for noting disabilities etc there is an addition that I can't work out.
It is against a couple of the entries and is also further down on selected ones.
Any ideas what it might denote?

I think it is the mark next to Surrey Battersea that is meant. Can you give the census details so that the full census page can be seen?

Hi all

It is the small marks on the right of the Place of Origin, it occurs after the horizontal - mark.

I think it is Ln for London, entered by the census clerk extracting places of birth.

Thanks to all who responded, I am aware of the location of Battersea but wondered if the Ln meant anything different.

And at the time it didn't register  ;D

I agree with this. With locations that were in Kent, Essex, Middlesex or Surrey before 1888 and in the county of London thereafter, you quite often find enumerators using the 'old' county and the checker then correcting them by writing 'Lon', 'Ldn' or similar (in 1891 and 1901).
