WHERE could Michael METZ have gone??
« on: Friday 20 August 10 06:05 BST (UK) »
:D  Hi Everyone...I have a query and it is about a disappearance of one of my relatives

His name was Michael Metz

This is what I know of the family...Father is Robert Metz originally from Germany...Mother Amelia nee Vogt.  Charles was born in 1870 at Berrima died Tasmania,  Michael born 1871 Berrima and William born 19.11.1873 Berrima died 23.5.1958 Taree NSW.

Charles went to Tasmania and went into Politics at Launceston and was involved in Shale mining etc married down there and had 4 girls 3 survived.  William married Christina May Fitzgerald

And Michael...well I cannot find Marriage or Death details of him...story goes...He had a big fight with his father Robert and took off, family said maybe he changed his surname to either that of aunt AUER or grandparents..VOGT.  Either way I have looked for a michael in both those surnames as well.  Another family tale is he may have gone to Western Australia...
Is there any way of looking up legal name changes like that?

Any info would be gratefully appreciated, thanks

He wouldn't have been the Thomas Michael Metz listed in the 1910 WA Electoral Roll (occ: stonemason), would he?

Hi Lin Up a Tree...no I had not seen either....where/which sites did u find those one...as I said I am still newish to this and so been using the offical wa bdm, qld bdm etc sites...the australian index site, never heard of it...

I do know his father was a stonemason and that he (robert) won the tender and built the Saint Patricks sutton forest church which was opened in 1879.  I do not know  when Robert came to australia (1 story he came with a paternal aunt and was only 9 known in germany as Karl Robert Metz, no other reference to a brother etc)(another source said he was on a ship and listed as stonemason...so trying to work that issue out too.

I do know from newspaper clippings that charles would come to melbourne etc for board meetings about the various mines he was with...so maybe Michael went down there and worked for Charles

so you've recently got the bug, eh! that's awesome  :D

i found both references on Ancestry, it's been invaluable for me throughout my own research journey.

the stonemason link sounds promising. let me see if i can find anything else for you.

Hi Cando! :*)

You're right about the A website but it's still got plenty of good nuggets IMHO  ;D

Sapphire mentioned Michael was born 1872, so the SA ref sounds promising!

I see in the Australia Birth Index there's also Michael Metz b. 1871 (Robert, Amelia) Berrima, New South Wales.

Also, Sapphire (wrt Michael's dad): I also found these 2 pieces, there's links so you have a couple more websites to add to your research arsenal.

According to the NSW State Records (http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au), there was a certificate of naturalisation issued:
Name: METZ Robert
Native place: Germany
Date of certificate: 10 Aug 1868
Ref: 3//88//[4/1202]//130

I also saw this in the online Aust newspapers site:
The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday 11 June 1901
ROBERTSON, Monday
Robert Metz, stonemason, a resident of Moss Vale died suddenly yesterday afternoon while driving in a sulky at the junction of the Robertson and Burra- wang roads. Deceased was accompanied by his daughter at the time.

Perhaps a transcription of the death certificate may be useful eg place of birth, occupation.  This gentleman died in a hospital or place of care so the information may not be helpful.

Information on transcription services in South Aus.
