McLeod, Nova Scotia
« on: Friday 20 August 10 16:14 BST (UK) »
Sorry, this is off the subject of your inquiry.
I was wondering if you may have information on the sirname McLeod which lived in Nova Scotia in the early to mid 1900's probrably between Sidney and New Boston and Louisburg areas.  They would be my great great grand parents and some how no one remembers their first names.  I know they had a daughter who married in Boston, Mass, USA to a gentlemen with the sirname Miller and they had two daughters named Flourance and Ethel. Ethel was my grand mother. She was raised during most of her childhood by her Grand parents the McLeods in Nova Scotia.

Let me know if this information helps you and if you can offer me any helpful information in return.

Welcome to Rootschat. I've split you post from the thread it started out on since it had nothing do do with it-
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,471702.0.html

McLeod is a very, very common surname in many parts of Nova Scotia (my ancestors were mostly in Queens County, descendants of McLeods from Skye via Drummond, Co. Londonderry in Ireland).

To trace the family in N.S. you will find lots of fantastic online resources.
Start with 1901 and 1911 census-
www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html
There are 9 Ethel McLeods in 1911 census in N.S. (you might also need to search for other variations- MacLeod, etc.)

There are vital records here but the dates may not be recent enough for your search either-

Meanwhile, I'll move this to Canada board.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

A couple of suggestions and questions. If you post all information that you know that can help us immensely. Is your grandmother still alive. If not, you can post any information that you have on her such as her birth date even if approximate. Also her marriage date and place if you know it. Was Ethel born in Boston or in Nova Scotia. Did she go by Miller or McLeod growing up. If you know where Ethel married, you should get her marriage certificate as it may give her parents or grandparents names. That may lead to her birth certificate. You usually need to work backwards to find the info that you want. There are many great genealogy and local historical socieites in Nova Scotia that can provide a lot of information that isn't available on line. I live in Nova Scotia and with more information may be able to narrow down your search.
Valerie
