Vic lookup - James & Samuel HALLIDAY
« on: Friday 20 August 10 17:20 BST (UK) »
I am looking for details of James and Samuel Halliday of Moffat, Scotland. According to his grave James died in Australia, 1875 but other details on the headstone are wrong and i suspect this might also be wrong. Samuel i have no clue.

I know they arrived in Melbourne December 1854 on the Earl of Eglinton but that is where my search has stalled.

Having looked on Victoria BMD's i have found:

1 James Halliday death in 1870
1 James Halliday death in 1872
1 Samuel Holliday death in 1864

This is as much as i can find without paying some money! If anyone has access to the records i would appreciate your help.

Thanks
Halliday

Hi there,

Can you give us their approximate ages and parents' names?  Death records often name parents depending on the informant's knowledge.

The grave headstone says:

In memory of Ninian Halliday died Newfieldbank 18 July 1853 aged 74 years.........................
Also James his son who died at Australia 15 April 1875 aged 40 years. It also goes on to mention Ninian Halliday's wife Isabella Johnstone.

Doesn't actually say died in the State of Victoria.  There is no central registry like the GRO.  Each State has a Registry.

Online bdm's for States of NSW, Qld and WA

No deaths for James 1875 in Tasmania or South Australia.

Hi
I wonder if New Zealand is a possibility.

People often "lumped together" NZ and Australia.

In 1918 Reg. 31207 Halliday  James Johnstone Age Not Recorded.

Thanks Sparrett

I hadn't thought of New Zealand but i have now checked there isn't anything.

1918 is definatly too late.

Thanks Cando

Like you say the headstone doesn't actually say he died in Victoria but i had already searched QLD, WA and NSW but thanks for the links anyway.

It is VIC, NT, SA and Tasmania that you can't access online and i thought Victoria was the obvious choice as that is where i am thinking they arrived.

If you have a moment could you also check Tasmania and SA between 1870 - 1874 for James Halliday, Haliday, Holiday and Holliday. Like i said the headstone is wrong on at least one of the dates.

Thanks again

HALLIDAY James age 36yrs d. 1876 DENILIQUIN  #5852

This death could possibly be him... registrations were usually sent quarterly & they were recorded when received also he could have died towards the end of 1875.

Age could be out due to the knowledge of the informant 'guessing' at the time of his death as their are no parents names recorded either.

A ten year difference in year of birth :-\

I have some resources for Deniliquin and will have to look at these for you.
