Polperro - Sea Captain Painting *COMPLETE*
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 03:05 BST (UK) »
Hello :)

I'm trying to track down an Augustus John work of Captain William Austin, although the portrait is unlikely to bear his name, perhaps something like 'Old Sea Captain'.

Captain Austin met Augustus in Cornwall when Augustus was a young man before he studied at the Slade College of Art. He was looking for interesting characters to draw.

The portrait hung in a private maritime museum in Polperro for many years but the museum eventually closed and the owner, a very reclusive man, died a number of years ago.

The contents of the museum were presumed sold but no famous art auction house nor John's granddaughter the artist Rebecca John, have any knowledge of it.

I would be grateful for any information about this painting or to hear from anyone who may have seen it at the museum.

Many thanks
Morgan

Modified - looks like it wasn't Augustus John and have traced the painting
