Providence Babalyon, Skircoat
« on: Saturday 21 August 10 08:31 BST (UK) »
Hi

1851 census shows my Brier family at Providence, Babylon, Skircoat.   I can't seem to find it on a modern map.  Can anyone suggest the probable area today.

Many Thanks,

Janette

Hi Janette

I've got relatives in Babylon too! I hope I can explain this properly - you can see it on the Old Maps website.

Go to:

 http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

Search for Halifax. On the modern map find King Cross, which is a big road junction just west of Savile Park.

Centre on that - you should see SOWERBY BRIDGE printed in big letters at the bottom left of your selected area.

Then click on the 1854 Yorkshire map. Click on enhanced zoom and you should be able to see Providence Place and Babylon marked. You might have to enlarge the map more and move about a bit on it. They are just off Parkinson Lane, and I imagine are long gone.

Thanks Anne.

We were down at Sowerby Bridge on Wednesday, and visited Washer Lane and Spark House.

I had it in my mind that Babylon was in Halifax.  We actually came down by Pye Nest.  At least I know where it was now.

Have you any idea why it was called Babylon?

Yes, it is in Halifax, in the King Cross area to the south west quite near to where my grandmother used to live. Just south of Parkinson Lane. It's all very built up round there now of course, but have a look at the old map, it looks quite rural in 1854.

No idea why it was called Babylon!
