1/7th Worcestershire Rgt - where enlisted/trained?
« on: Monday 23 August 10 01:03 BST (UK) »
My Great Uncle Charlie died in WW1.  Charles Thomas PORTER b.1895 & d.6 Sep 1917 "France & Flanders".  I ordered his records from Nat'l Archives but it only gave what I already knew from the War Graves website:

Name:     PORTER, CHARLES THOMAS
Rank:    Private
Regiment/Service:    Worcestershire Regiment
Unit Text:    1st/7th Bn.
Age:    24
Date of Death:    06/09/1917
Service No:    203804   (previously 20839)
Additional information:    Native of Frith Common, Eardiston, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire.
Grave/Memorial Reference:    VI. A. 18A.
Cemetery:    WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY

I would like to know where he enlisted, trained, how long he was in hospital (he likely was wounded about mid Aug in Belgium and transported to Wimereux, therefore buried there... a hospital stn I understand).

How can I find out about his life before he died and after he left home?  I have his letters but they are censored.  I also have the psychic's letters to his parents to ease their grief.
Thank you so much in advance, and sorry this is so long!
Susan Gardener.

Thank you so much.  That is kind of you Ady.
Does it have the date that he enlisted or just where?  I am trying to do a timeline.
That website sure helps... I can track some of the Regiments movements, therefore Uncle Charlie's too.

I really would like to find out where he trained and when he enlisted and most of all his hospital records.  Any ideas?

Thanks so much again.
Susan.

Susan
only about 30% of Service Records survive after the Blitz of 1940/41 so it may have been burned...this record would have held medical docs etc as well as where he served.
The ones that have survived are nearly all on Ancestry.
the 1/7th Unit War diary will tell you what they were doing but it rarely mentions Other Ranks names..You can get copies of this from the NA at Kew it maybe available to download online otherwise you can order it.
Am sure someone will point you to where the War Diary is :)
