The postmark on the front isn't very clear but I'm almost certain that the name on the postmark is Stratford London which is fairly near Leyton.  It has the name, and the date, 21st Jan  04 and the time of sorting which was 12.15 am.  The postmark on the back has been done when it arrived at Oxford at 8.30 the same morning. Presumably that's what they did in those days?!  Certainly was a good postal service!

This could be J. Lane in the 1901 census.....

 RG13/1651, Folio 36, P. 22  87 Hampton Road, Ilford.

Josiah Lane, 24, Head, Florist, Brixton London,
Elizabeth Lane, 27, Wife, Sittingbourne Kent.

Ilford is not far from Leyton.

[Added later]

Looks like his full name was Josiah Birmingham Lane, b. 1878, Brixton Surrey.

He appears in earlier censuses as the son of Jacob Lane, Nurseryman, b. 1848, Lavington, Wiltshire.

Married Elizabeth Ann Jeffery in 1900 in Enfield.

Do the names ring any bells ?

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Have done some further research on Joseph Lane.  Josiah is not him as Joe came from Somerset not Wiltshire, but was worth a try and thanks for that.   I now think that he didn't in fact have a shop but a market stall in Broadway as there is reference to there being a market in Broadway on another site,no mention of Joe, just the fact of there being the market, so, as the shop seems as if it never existed I hit on the idea that it could well be a market stall;  not that this gets me too much further, as I still can't work out who he is, never mind anything else!!!!!!!

I have been doing more research on the Joseph Lane front!  I have run to earth  that Joseph John (young Joseph) was born in 1879, he was on the 1881 census aged 2 living with his parents Joseph and Lucy at Winscombe in Somerset; after this Joseph seems to disapear.  I can't find him on the 1891 census, nor does he appear to be on the 1901, although of course, he could have left home by now.  His two brothers, Arthur and Benjamin are on the 1901 census, but not Joseph.  Would it be possible to be able to run Joseph to earth? of course, he could have died, but I've looked for that too and have got nowhere!  Perhaps he went to London (flower shop?!) but not in 1891!  Any help to find this elusive 'Cousin' would be really appreciated.  Thankyou!

Thank you very much for your research.  Certainly that is Joseph aged 12 which is excellent!  It could well be that this is Joseph with his wife (?!") in Bristol in  1901;  having said that I've managed to trace someone who MIGHT be Joseph in 1901 who lived at 25 Palmerton Rd Holy Trinity Southampton, who was a Journeyman Gard (Worker)?!!!! None of this, however, fits in with the Florist in Leyton!  I begin to think that this will forever remain a mystery!!!!  Regards.....

There is a marriage between Joseph John Lane and Margaret Thomas Sep 1900 Bristol
vol:6a page:61

Also Benjamin Collins and Ada Thomas sep 1895 Bristol vol:6a page:39

The two wives have same surname, hence brother in law and sister in law.

Although on the census Benjamins wife is called Edith.
