I'm still working on the florist  :)   No sign of him/her in the Essex PO Trade directories 1898 and 1906.

and I couldnt see a J Lane Florist in Leyton in 1901 census.  >:(

The front is too large to send over 500!  There is a lot of detail.

O.H has kindly done the scanning for me and written the last two messages!! Unfortunately the front of the envelope wouldn't go through, too much detail maybe with pictures of flying yellow birds etc! the back, however, has, and that is the important bit showing the message and J.Lane Florist etc.   Do hope you can make something of it.  Best wishes  Liz

Just looked at reply #3 's link
So the Chemical company made some sort of fertiliser out of canary poo.

Looks like the envelope is their advertising - I guess J Lane stocks this product or uses it to grow his/her flowers, and thus gets the envelopes to use for the business. Bit like a sponsor.

So someone in Oxford (see postmark) had one of these envelopes and sent something to your rellie.
Where is the address this is sent to?

Possibly as a response (the day letter rec'd) he sent £10 to a Joe.
Or, as I said before, he just used the envelope to write himself a note.

The front of the envelope has written right at the top 'Private' then underneath is the name and address: Mr J.R.Lane,
9,Queen Street,
Oxford.
J.R.Lane was my G.Grandfather, and we have always understood that J.Lane, Florist was his brother Joseph.  However, it appears that Joseph was in fact a Schoolmaster.  However, Joseph had a son also called Joseph so I am now wondering if it was him who was the florist?!  As you say, the writing on the back is J.R making a note that he has sent this money, and the date when he did it.  Curiously too, the correspondence was sent to 9 Queen Street, which was J.R's business address! (he was a Gentlemans Outfitter).  Was this something that needed keeping from the rest of the family, or maybe it was usual practice!  Do hope you manage to make something of all this, and again thanks.

Are there any birthdays or anniversaries in the family around this date?  Perhaps he ordered some flowers from nephew Joseph the florist for a wedding or celebration of some sort?  Sounds a lot of money to be just a bunch or two.

I simply don't know, but that is a possibility.  I've always thought that for some reason'Joe' had to be bailed out ,but I have no concrete reason to think this, it just seemed the general family feeling which could have been way off the mark!!
