Another john Smith
« on: Monday 23 August 10 23:58 BST (UK) »
i am posting this in hope someone really fancies a challenge!
I am looking for info regarding my 4x great grandfather John Smith.
If someone wishes to pick up the gauntlet... this is what i know

i believe he was born1806/7in Wisbech Cambridgeshire.
in 1851 - i have found him living with wife Hannah in Wisbech - Sandyland, along with 5 children, occ: porter.
In '61, aged 52 - same area
and in '71 in sandyland formerly a corn porter.
although i have found out a little about his wife Hannah Woodfiel, i have not been able to find out anything about him prior to 1851 - can anyone assist???

many thanks
Betton

hi suzard
The issue i have - is getting further back with his history ;D
i know he married hannah woodfield (but the name and date is unknown)
and i'm not sure who is parents are - apart that he was born in Wisbech.
Thanks - for the 1841 info, that plugs a hole up!  :)

From Boyds marriage index.

1832 / WOODFIELD  HANNAH  /SMITH  JOHN / WISBECH ST PETER

There are two possible Johns at    http://www.cfhs.org.uk/  baptised in Wisbech

1804 - to John and Elizabeth

1806  - to Isaac and Martha

Boyds again.

1803 / SMITH  JOHN / PARLETT  ELIZABETH / WISBECH ST PETER
1805 / SMITH  JOHN / WATSON  ELIZABETH  /WISBECH ST PETER
1802 / SMITH  ISAAC/  WILKIN, WILKEN  MARTHA/  WISBECH ST PETER

There are lots of other John Smith/Elizabeth marriages in Cambridgeshire around the same time.

The burial index on the Cambs FHS site has a burial of John Smith infant at Wisbech St Peter in 1804. I can't see a burial though for the other one. You need to check the parish register to see whether parents are mentioned

Unfortunately the burial of John Smith the infant on 11 November 1804 does not mention parents.

John and Hannah married 5 April 1832, she was a spinster and he was a widr, both otp.  Witnesses were John Gathercole and Sarah Bowers.

There was a previous marriage of a John Smith in 1823 but I think that is unlikely to be him as that John was also a widr at the time of marriage so maybe your John's first marriage was in another parish.

John Smith the son of Isaac and Martha was baptised 4 June 1806.

Thanks everyone for all your support  ;D
I have found a sibling for john, (son of Isaac & Martha)
Thomas born 1803, but no luck with others as of yet.
There are no Isaac births that could match on igi
and i'm not sure that there is anything on ancestry either  ???
will keep plugging away!

Thomas was baptised 25 July and one more, Isaac, baptised 27 March 1811.

Can't see baptisms or burials for Isaac and Martha.  They married 18 October both of the parish and bachelor and spinster.   Witnesses Robert Anderson and John Hall.

Good luck with your searches - I have a John Smith too!

There is an isaac smith in 1841 living in St Andrew the Less  ??? - aged 30, with wife Ann (no occupation stated)
Which seems to be the only one i can find...
At least Isaac doesn't seem to be such a prevalent name  :-[
