obtaining a copy of a will from England "complete"
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 00:28 BST (UK) »
I have information from three ancestors from an index, stating they made wills. The information is not detailed though the amount and executor is there.
I would like to obtain copies of the wills or a transcript to see who the money went to etc. and if needed the death duty registers. The dates are 1887, 1922, and 1932.
There may also be one from 1934 though I haven't ascertained it is a relative yet.
I know there are indexes etc. please tell me if you know, how to order the more detailed wills.
They are all in London. Thanks anyone who has experience with this.

Hi heathgirl  :)

This link should give you the info you need to send away for copies of the wills:

Thank you. I have the probate information so hopefully I can just write to London with the information and a money order in Sterling. The web page is a wee bit confusing as I can't figure out if I need to write to York or London, and whether I still need the application form, but I have more information than I started with.
It is relatively inexpensive at least.

Hi heathgirl,
If you go to the heading "What does it cost", the last dot point there states:
  • If you wish to write for a search and/or copy, you should write to The Postal Searches & Copies Dept, York Probate Sub-Registry, Castle Chambers, Clifford Street, York, YO1 9RG, where a special unit deals with such requests. Download an application form with their Conditions of Service.

"Downlad an application form" is clickable  - and  yes, it's nice to have a copy service at such a good price!

Cheers

Thanks again for the quick advice. It will be so interesting to see what sort of information  a will can provide to give me more clues. I have tried a lot of genealogy tips but have never had the will to order a will ! heathgirl
