Newspaper Articles or the like.
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 07:06 BST (UK) »
Is there anywhere aside from librarys in each district or local records offices etc that I can get information from newspapers etc from. I can't travel overseas to find this info and as I am new to this I was wondering where I could look.

Regards Lesley.

Hi

No not really.
Most of the local papers are kept at the local history libraries in the particular area, sometimes you can pick up an article in a bigger paper but not very often.
Some local libraries do a look up service but they only do so long for free, I think the Huddersfield local history libray do an hour a month so if you can give them dates it would help. Or you could post a message in the appropriate region on this site and some nice person might be able to help.

There are many large and medium sized 19th century British newspapers on the Gale Newspaper Archive which you can access online.  Access is free via some County Library Services  and also in some countries (eg Australia or some Australian states).  I think you may be able to have a subscription or pay to view access to Gale too.  There are Australian newspapers freely available online too and American ones can be viewed (for a fee?) also.  You don't say where you are, lecal35, so these may not be what you want.  .

If you have a particular incident eg death registered following inquest, you could post on the relevant board here and someone may be able to look up for you.  You would need to give as many details as possible to narrow down the search.

I have found many articles relating to my fairly ordinary family - death notices, inquests, getting involved in fights, adverts relating to their work etc.
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

Hello Lesley ...

How far back are you wanting to look and in which country?

In NZ we have a great site to search digitised past newpapers and periodicals covering the years 1839 to 1945, not a complete collection yet but a very useful resource http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast...

Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
