Hi there

It's my first time on this site, so I'm even more excited to find someone else has heard of Woolley sanitorium in Slaley. I was born in the sanatorium in 1958 and have tried hard to find some photos of the building at that time.  I did find a few very blurry aerial photos but I can hardly make the buildings out. Any help here or other knowledge/info about the sanatorium would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Molly

Nice to hear from you!  I was beginning to think I'd misheard my info on Woolley Sanitorium as no one else seems to have any info on its existence.  I'm afraid I can't help much, as my info goes a lot further back, but have you tried the library at Hexham for any info?

Hello again EeyorBlue

Looks like a trip to Hexham might be the next step then.

I'm thinking of writing an article/book (ha ha) on north east sanatoria, so early stuff would be good too if you're happy to share?

You can get an idea of the layout of the Sanatorium by looking at old Ordnance Survey maps.
Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm

Click on 'search' (top of the page).
Select 'coordinates'.
A new page will open.
In the bottom two boxes enter the numbers 396640 and 559608, then click 'centre map'.
You should get a present-day map centred on where the sanatorium used to be.
Use the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page to select the map dated 1970 - 1979, which clearly shows the sanatorium.
To zoom in or out of the map click on either the + or - buttons at the bottom of the page and then click on the map.

Hope this helps

Jennifer

Got it Jennifer.  Thanks again. I didn't even realise it used to be in Durham county...I always though it was within Northumberland boundaries!

It was always in Northumberland.
This is a County Durham website which (usefully) extends its reach into Northumberland!
