Trying to track the wife and parents of Edward Conway born 1863 deptford London. He married Elizabeth (born 1868) from Leytonstone. I have their whereabouts in 1891 and 1901 censuses, but none before that.

Have you looked for their marriage on freebmd?

Marriages September qtr 1886

Edward Conway   Greenwich  1d 1429
Elizabeth Sullivan

A copy of the marriage cert will give their fathers names

Have you seen the 1871 entry for Edward Conway b 1861 St Pancras

Hi

For the period he was born - Deptford was Kent.  There is no birth on freebmd and no Edward Conway on the 1871 that matches a Kent birthplace

You may have to consider the possibility that he was illegitimate and his mother married after his birth.  He may be shown under her married name in 1871/1881

Being honest - with difficulty.  I should also have mentioned the alternative scenario which is that he may have been legitimate but his father died and mum re-married before 1871.  Same problem in finding him though.

It means checking freebmd for all female Conway marriages in that area between his birth and the 1871 census - but that assumes she married in the Deptford area which was in the Greenwich registration district

I have just checked freebmd and there are only 2 in Greenwich between 1862-1871 - both males

As there is usually more than one male name on the same page - you have to lookup all of them on the 1871 to see if they had a wife with the same christian name as the female Conway you found

You then check the household to see if there is a son Edward born before the marriage date

It can be very tedious - believe me - I have had to do it a number of times

Hi

There is this birth registration

Births Dec 1860
CONWAY  Edmund     Greenwich  1d 576

Greenwich would be the registration district covering Deptford.

Nothing for Edmund in the civil registration or censuses - just the birth registration.

Regards

Valda

I found this marriage which you may want to bear in mind when you get his fathers name from his marriage cert

Jeremiah Conway to Mary White 22.1.1863 St Paul Deptford - fathers Edmund White and Edmund Conway

As Edward shows his birthyear as 1863 - it's a possibility
