Samuel Edwards b1740
« on: Wednesday 25 August 10 02:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

Samuel Edwards married Sarah Robinson at St Clement Danes on 14 June 1770.  He was noted as being of the parish of St Benedict's near Paul's Wharf London.  Despite our best efforts over the years we have been unable to find any information about his birth, birthplace or parents.  We've worked out his birth year as being about 1740 from his obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine in 1807.

Does anyone know anything about this man please?

I'll take advice please as to whether I should post on the General England board as well.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob

Posting here on London & Middlesex is fine.

Although baptisms in this parish are covered by the IGI, there is no apparent entry. Having also looked at the parish registers for 1739, 1740 and 1741 there is still no entry so I would venture to say that hey may have been residing in the parish at the time of his marriage and for the purposes of calling the banns, but his original birthplace was somewhere else.

The IGI has baptisms for 4 Samuel Edwards 1740 +/- 2 yrs within London, have you researched those families to rule them out?

The other alternative is to wait for Ancestry to finish transcribing baptisms from the LMA & Guildhall deposited registers pre-1813 to see if he turns up there but that project won't be finished until well into 2011.

Hi Dawn

Thanks for your post.  Yes we have looked at the 4 Samuels in London and ruled them out as best we can, although we'd love to think that one of them is the one.

We have sorta come to the conclusion that he was most likely born outside London and we believe he is from a 'good' family as his wife was the daughter of an Admiral.

Also thanks for the info about Ancestry's activities, I guess we'll just have to wait.

Cheers
