Local jewellers listing Holborn area & surrounds 1840s and 1850s??
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 01:00 BST (UK) »
Seeking any local directory of jewellers in the Holborn and surrounding area during the 1840a and 1850s??

Specifically too I am seeking the existence of a John William PATTERSON who was such a jeweller and I believe in this general area (but cannot be certain though!).

Perhaps someone has access to such a listing of these tradespeople??

Thanks,
Rob

I doubt if there's a separate directory just for jewellers, but I could be wrong.  There will however be a section for them in any trade directory of the period.  The Historical Directories site is patchy.

Holborn in next door to Clerkenwell, and both were areas where watchmakers and jewellers worked - and the famous Hatton Garden is off the road called Holborn.
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Dear Jeuel,

That is interesting about Holborn because I am also searching for an 1851 & 1861 Census entries for :

279 Holborn in that area but it does not state it was a street or anything really!

Does this correspond with any address format that you recognise?

Thanks very much
Regards,
Rob

Hi

May I just post a reminder that Hatton Garden / Leather Lane is in that area.
Hatton Garden being the centre of the jewellery trade for "centuries".

So, if you are looking for a short list of merchants ............
