James Pelley
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 06:22 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am looking for the parents of:

James Pelley
D.O.B: 1883-1962
married: Lora Meeds (or spelled Laura Meade) 1891-1963

James had 10 children: Russell, Charlotte, Nina, Simon, Violet, Eva, Leo, Margaret, Mabel, William.

He resided in Guysborough, N.S.

I was also told that the Pelley's came from 3 areas of Englan, The Channel Islands, Dorset and Normandy. How do I know which one my family comes from? Where do I begin to look?

Any information would be grateful.

Thanks,
Joe P.

Hi Joe,

Do you have James on the 1911 census of Canada? It says on that that his tribal origin is English. Do you have his birth cert?

In addition to above, do you have his marriage cert? If so, what information on his parents was on that?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat!

There's no way of knowing where in England your family originated from without tracing James' family back until you find the immigrant ancestor.

https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
also has a possible marriage in 1909 for a James Pelly to Laura Pelly

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/e/l/Joseph-Alfred-charles-Pelley-Ontario/PDFGENEO5.pdf
 - shows Laura as the daughter of Thomas Pelley and Esther Meade

http://www.angelfire.com/ca4/Patsy/stanns.html
 - several of the family mentioned here.

You should look at local records in Guysborough. There do seem to be some Pelly/Pelley families in Newfoundland - might be a link there.

www.novascotiagenealogy.com

just a note to check under alternate spelling of Pelly as many of the records have been transcribed under Pelly as well as Pelley. Great info on the site.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~guys/index.html

Guysborough Gen Web
under the names being researched, there is someone researching Pelly/Pelley
Lots of other info on the site as well that could help you.

another site  for looking for 1901/1911 census info that will let you look at original documents through the split screen option

http://automatedgenealogy.com

you can also look at the 1881 and 1891 census at
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases

http://automatedgenealogy.com

1911 census has
James Pelley, age 28
Lora/Cora Pelley, age 20
James Russell, age 8 months
when you use the split screen option, shows they are living in Tompkinsville. Very hard to read the original documents.

www.novascotiagenealogy.com
has a late birth registration for Charlotte Pelly b. 1888 Tomkinville. This could be a sister of your James as he named one of his children Charlotte. This may narrow your search for the family by using Tompkinville as your primary serach for possible information.
