John CHRISTIE, Ireland to Scotland- completed
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 22:20 BST (UK) »
Need help with finding enough details on John Christie's family in order to use Scotland's People to find birth certificates, etc. so would appreciate any census help.

John CHRISTIE born in Limavady area sometime after 1854, son of James Christie and Susannah Jane Gilmore of Co.Londonderry, Ireland. He was a carpenter and had 4 children: James, Andrew, Jessie, Cissie (probably a nickname).

James had a brother William (b.c1859) who stayed in Ireland and other siblings I haven't been able to trace: George, James, Margaret (born 4 June 1864).

Unfortunately I have no idea of wife's name, date of marriage or birthdates of children so this may be a wildgoose chase.

John Christie 37 b Ireland  Locomotive Boiler Cuber
Dora   39 b Ireland

The next 1891 entry for that profile was b 1859 but you say his brother James was born around 1859

Many thanks for those records but 'my' John was supposed to be a carpenter at some stage and names of children don't match the census records. Will keep a note of that Christie family just in case they do turn out to be the right ones.

Hi

1891 has a John Christie b Ireland occ joiner but he was b 1848

I've checked all 1881 and 1891 entries for occupation but that's the only one that comes close and although married - he had no children

I'll have a crack via the children

Since the 1881 census listed a child Susan Christie aged 6 months that didn't appear with the parents in 1891 census I thought she might be the one to follow. Found death registration on Scotland's People- 2 May 1882 at 181 Main St. Glasgow, Susan Christy, aged 19 months, pertussis [whooping cough], father John Christy locomotive builder's labourer, mother Dora? Christy M.S. Collier? Collins? [difficult to read].

John Christie's parents were married in Jan.1854 so the 1848 John Christie isn't very likely.

Suppose that other possibility is that the 'Scotland' bit is wrong. Information came from John's great-niece in Ireland.

The only thing I can think of is to check out the marriage for John &  Dora as you know who John's parents were.  It will at least eliminate them if it's the wrong parents

I had intended to get that marriage but had to wait until this morning to purchase more credits. From searching the index last night I knew that John Christy married 1876 in Lanarkshire to Dora Collins.
The marriage certificate says John Christy's parents were James Christie and Margaret Wilson so as I suspected this is not the correct family.
The great-niece who gave these details in the first place died a number of years ago and her husband passed her research on to a relative in the U.S. who did not respond to my letter or email so this might be a brickwall unless I can get more information.
