Tram death
« on: Friday 27 August 10 04:43 BST (UK) »
My great Grandfather James Warner was killed by a Tram between 1881 and 1891.  He lived in Shoreditch and so I believe it must have been in that area.  He was married to Eliza and they had six children.
Is there a website that I can search for his accident/death?
Thank you for your help.
Best wishes

Hi,

To search for English/Welsh births, marriages and deaths I use FreeBMD.  It's a volunteer site so new records are added on a regular basis.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

I would suggest using the county of Middlesex to look for the death;  he might have been out of the Shoreditch registration district when he died and deaths are registered in the area where the person died.

There are a couple of possible deaths for a James Warner;  hope one of them fits the bill.

I think one of these could be him.....

James Warner
Age at death: 52
Shoreditch
Apr-May-Jun 1880
Vol 1c  Page 97

James Warner
Age at death: 56
Oct-Nov-Dec 1889
Vol 1c  Page 88

There are a few other James Warners that died in Shoreditch in the period you mentioned, but they were all much more elderly.  If you can confirm his birth year, that would help  :)

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

My Great Grandfather was James Warner born in 1844 in Shoreditch.  He was killed by a Tram between 1881 and 1891.  He appeared on the 1881 Census with wife Eliza and six children,  However, he doesn't appear on the 1891 census.
Thank you so much for your replies, I am very grateful.

The problem of course is that we don't know exactly where he met his unfortunate death - it may not have been Shoreditch/Hackney.   There doesn't appear to be any James Warners born in 1844 dying in London between 1881 and 1891.  The nearest two are a James Warner born in 1842, who died in the City of London in Q4 of 1887, and another born abt 1841, who died in Chelsea in Q3 of 1890.  Would he have had connections with either of these two places ?

Best Wishes,  Nick.

His occupation might help pinpoint his death.

Thank you for your replies.
James Warner was a General Dealer.  What that means is a mystery, certainly nothing special and so I guess he might have been a rag and bone man!!   I know they were a poor family.   He would most probably have not ventured very far from home.  Since he was born in abt. 1844 and was killed between 1881 and 1891, he would have been close to 45.  He and his wife and children were living at 16, Wilson Street, Shoreditch in the 1881 census and in the 1891 census Eliza and the six children were still living in the same house.  In the 1901 census they were living at 36, Bevenden Street, Shoreditch.
I am grateful for your help and thank you in advance.
Best wishes

Stupid question, maybe, but if you don't have his death certificate, or any articles about his death, how do you know he was hit by a tram?  ???

Hi Pru
My Mother, who died in 2004 at 93 yrs and who in 2001 when I discussed for the 1st time!! with her about her family history, told me that her Grandfather James Warner had been killed by a tram.  I am so sad now that I no longer have her around to ask her further questions.  I spent 18 years researching my fathers Eastern European Family History and only moved onto my Mothers in 2001.
Its not a stupid question at all and I am grateful that you have taken the trouble to contact me.  Thank you..
Best wishes
