Hi there Pru
We live in the same Nation, you NSW and me in Tasmania.
Thank you so much for the census copies.   I do have them and have been working solely from the census. I need to look on the 1911 census to see if James Warner b. 1844 shows up anywhere, although I very much doubt that, as he would have been 67 and from what I was told, he didn't survive to much of an age.  However, a census is only as good as the person taking the information and having spent more than ten years researching my Father's Polish family in the UK and seeing so many errors in the spelling of names, I feel that the initials in the 1881 census could have been the result of the census taker not understanding the accent of the householders.  I remember thinking when I found the 1881 census, that it was wrong and then noticed the birth dates as being what I hold and the names are not dissimilar.  As an example the letter L for my ggrandmother Eliza, perhaps the census taker only heard Liza and again their daughter Eliza, he/she has placed an L for her, F for Phoebe and so on.  I take the 1881 as accurate.
Thank you again for your help and advice, very grateful.
Best wishes

Thank you to AVM for your replies to my James Warner query.
Reply 23 is right, I believe but reply 24 is not.
James Warner married Eliza, he was born 1844 and she, 1847
They had a daughter Phoebe born in 1881, she went onto marry Walter Prodrick.
They also had my grandfather Charles Warner born in 1877 and he married my grandmother Sarah Grace Roberts born in 1879.
It is always complicated and how lucky our descendants will be, to have all their ancestors found for them but sad they won't have the fun involved.
Thank you again
Best wishes

Hi AVM
24 is not right because it states that James Warner was married to Phoebe.  He married Eliza Hill.  They had six children.  James John, Thomas, Eliza, Charles, my grandfather, Phoebe and William.
On 24 the children quoted are:- James, Charles, Eliza, Margaret and Mary.

I know its very confusing.......families are, aren't they
Thank you

But post #24 shows James in 1861 aged 17 - before his marriage - with parents James and Phoebe.

He's exactly the right age to be your James who went on to marry Eliza HILL in 1867.

He has a father called James which corresponds with the 1867 marriage certificate.

He's in Bethnal Green in 1861 - the right area for the 1867 marriage.

He has a mother called Phoebe  - your James went on to name a daughter Phoebe. (Family names were often used).

He has a brother called Charles - your James went on to name a son Charles.

And so on...

I think he's at least worth another look.

When my guncle was killed by an omnibus in 1896 I had the exact date and place which made it easy for me to approach a local record office in that area. They very kindly looked in the papers and sent me the account 0f the coroners report. Whether you could try the same thing I dont know as your incident was a bit earlier and you would really need to know the facts. Just an idea once you have the death cert.
