1841 - occupations
« on: Friday 27 August 10 17:43 BST (UK) »
I have tried to search the 1841 census for London for Umbrella makers but I seem unable to find any site that has this option.
Some say they do but only offer the name input and then leave the scanning to you.
Any ideas.
I may be flogging a deadhorse but trying to find William Crocket and mary ann Crockett.
I have them in later census but unless they are on the missing St. Lukes sheets then I dont know where they are.

Hi Peter,
They certainly are nt obvious in 1841, but here is a faint in every sense of the word  possibility

HO107 / 706  11/25 4
Smiths Buildings, St Leonards  Shoreditch, Tower Hamlets.

The image is soo faint but transcribed William, Mary, William and Robert  ?(transcribed Cornella on A****Y)
William ? 29  Umbrella Maker(Possibly?)
Mary     ? 22
William  ?  5
Robert   ?  1

The ages seem to tie in with the 1851. Not sure if its my wishful thinking reading it as Umbrella maker and possibly Crocket.

Best wishes

I think you could well be right - it looks quite like umbrella maker.

Well, I'm amazed how you picked that up.
The clincher is that at the same address there are 2 Bateman's living and Mary Ann Bateman was William Crocket's wife.
I have tried to clean up the image aand you can convince yourself that it is umbrella maker
and the family ages all fit nicely
Thanks for that.

A quick search on The Genealogist for umbrella on the 1841 Census in London pulled out 530, with the Crocketts living in Half Moon Street, St. Botolph Without Bishopsgate, Middlesex  :)

HO107/725  Book: 8 Folio: 22 Page: 38

On The Genealogist (as well as on names) you can search for keywords such as occupation or geographical area on any England & Wales Census between 1841 and 1901, and you can narrow your searches to counties.

Best Wishes,  Nick.
