The Scottish Assessors office (current) gives 3 houses/locations ie Woodhouse Cottage; Woodhouse, Bowholm; Woodhouselees; all Canonbie, though I suspect the last is a farm.
Ireland, Co Antrim: Kerr; Hollinger; Forsythe; Moore
Ireland, Co Louth: Carson; Leslie
Ireland, Co Kerry: Ferris
Scotland, Perthshire/Glasgow:  Stewart
England, Devon/Cornwall: Ferris, Gasser/Jasser/Jesser, Norman

First one is a row of what must have been farm or weavers cottages on the B6357 right in the centre of Canonbie.  Google Earth is great!  ;D  post code DG14 0UX

The second is a cottage attached to a farm DG14 0XT so that's doubtful, and the Woodhouselees looks like "the big hoose"  ;D

Hello,

As a general tip.  If you search the houses either side, on the www.freebmd.org.uk site, it gives the route the cenus enumurator took.

So either side of 'your' Woodhouse, where your George Bell, (Draper/Grocer), lived with  his family  was Priorbank and Lowmarchhouse.

A search on www.old-maps.co.uk - for a Priorbank - I used this as I thought there'd be less of them than Woodhouses.  One came up in Canonbie.  As per Fifer1947's post I'd imagine. I scrolled down into their 1859 map to see if I could clarify where the address was.

I then utilsed the 6" to 1 miles Google overlay on the NLS website at http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/google.html

Used the map tab on the left to zoom down to Canonbie and when close in changed to the historical overlay.  Still none the wiser.  A good quality map though.

Good luck with your searching.

Regards,   Steve

 :)

There's a head stone in Canonbie church yard with a mention of Woodhouse. I believe it is the house in Canonbie called Woodhouse.

Thank you all for your help. I now know the location of Woodhouse.

With the help of Google Earth Street View, the 1901 map of Cumberland at old-maps.co.uk and the photo of Woodhouse on flickr.com.

Kind Regards.

Hi dryden

Have just come acrosss this site.

My name is Ian Kellitt-- my family have lived in Woodhouse since 1967
Would be really interested in any
historical information you could provide. For instance do you knowwhen Mr Bell purchased the house and was he the first occupier?
