Hi Both,

Thought I would stick my bit in.I too lived in Exeter for awhile and loved it as a single person.I still love it now for the shops but Exeter Cathedral takes your breath away and now I am into family History I have started to look upwards(another one of the numerous side effects of FH...NECK ACHE) at the lovely old buildings.

I have no family connections with Exeter but its still a great place to go.For a fun and free day out, visit the museum.......FANTASTIC PLACE.
They quite often have special events laid on for the kids in the holidays too.

Best Wishes

Hi Tabitha
Hope your still checking this section. I've not got Paris Street during exact period you were asking for however the following link shows the street during the war and, other than the obvious bomb damage, will be very close to 1909.
http://www.devon.gov.uk/library/locstudy/home9.html
My great grandmother (pre marriage c1880's) lived at No.75. and 39 Paris Street Tenements c1900 to the late 1920's. My Aunt (still with us) remembers alot whilst living there. grocer called "Pike"  and the Butchers  called "Whiteway" but can't remember the name of the Dairy but is investigating.
Will post more as it comes in. Hope this helps.

Hi Hawkwind,

Yes I'm still checking....always checking!! Thank you for the link to the Paris Street photos, they're fascinating. We went to Exeter a couple of weeks ago so I could have a look for myself at the area. It's hard to picture it as it would have been prior to being bombed.

Thanks again to you and your aunt for your help.

Cheers
tabitha  :)

My grandmother (Ethel Maud) was born at 76 Exter Street on 19 Dec 1890.  Parents James William Roberts (cab driver); mother Lilian (or Lily) Roberts (nee Bennett).  Interested to find out the Honiton Inn was next door at no 74.
The family moved to Wendover, Bucks sometime before 1895.

Not sure if you had your question answered already, if so great, if not here goes.
Firstly I'm going to assume you meant 74 'Paris' Street not Exeter Street. 74 would have indeed been next to the Honiton Inn. If you stood at the bottom of Paris st with the Inn on your left all houses continuing up Paris St on the same side were numbered even.
My GGMother and GGFather met on the other side of the street. My GGM living at 75 and my GGF living at 39. You may find the link below of interest. It gives a brief history of Paris St.
http://littleitaly.fortunecity.com/bologna/238/ (Please don't why it says littleitaly and bologna!!! It really is Exeter))
At the main page go to "Alternative Navigation" and select "Pubs By City Area" on the next page "Pub Links and Guide" click on the 'St Sidwells / Longbrook St' link. You'll find the Honiton Inn listed there.
Hope this helps

That's interesting, as I have a Pike family (including my great-grandfather) living in Paris Street (in the court behind Rush's) in 1871.  They were mostly tailors, and by 1881 had moved to Union Terrace, but they are a huge family and it's not impossible that one might have become a grocer.  I'll have to watch out for him!

So does anyone have any idea what 'Rush's' was, and where in Paris Street?
Researching:
Waycott, Fewings, Piper, Burgoyne, Johns, Phillips, Paddon, Streat;
Morrish, Rowdon, Pike, Lowder, Flood, Parsons and others.
All in glorious Devon!
