Hi Alison

There is a Robert John Stocker, born 14th April 1857, christened on 12th May 1857 at All Saints Church, Paddington.

Parents are given as George & Martha Stocker, all living at 1 Arthur Mews.  George is down as a sweep.

Finding the marriage certificate for him and Jane or George and Martha should sort it if they give the father's middle name.  I'll see if I can find any other christenings for G&M's children to see if the middle name is given.

Ruth

Hi Ruth

Lovely, thanks for that,I'd be grateful for anything you could find, like I said, some other peoples trees I've looked at really get me confused and I tend to lose heart after a time and leave it for a while.

Hi Alison

That's no problem.  I tend not to look at other people's trees if they have the same people as me unless I check out the information myself as occasionally assumptions are made about names and locations that simply don't add up and the information sometimes can be proved to be completely wrong.

I've found some of G & M's children so I'll post them separately.  Also found a George Miles Stocker, son of George & Martha but I don't know at the moment whether they are "your" George and Martha.

There is a George Stocker married to a Martha Susannah Wingfield in 1849 in London.

They are turning up differently when their children are christened.  Either as George & Martha, George & Martha Susannah or George Miles & Martha Susannah, but I *think* they are all the same people.

There are a number of children christened between 1850 and 1874 (with an adult christening in 1897) and having children over 24 years is perfectly viable for the era.

St Mary, Bryanston Square, London

Martha Ann, b. 7 October 1850, chr. 27 October 1850 @ 1 Crawford Mews, fathers occ: Cabinet Maker

George Joseph,  chr. 7 November 1852 @ Charles Mews, fathers occ:  Chimney Sweep

All Saints, Paddington

Georgiana, b 2 Nov 1854 chr. 10 Dec 1854 @ 4 Arthur Mews, Stanley Street, fathers occ:  Sweep

Robert John.......1857

Caroline Elizabeth Jane, b 29 May 1859  chr. 12 June 1859 @ 4 Stanley Street, fathers occ:  Sweep

George Miles,  chr. 8 April 1874 @ 99 Gloucester Mews, fathers occ: Sweep.  Freebmd gives his birth year as 1874.

Ruth Rebecca, adult christening 27 Jan 1897 as her married name of Ruth Rebecca Messenger.  Martha Susannah is dead by now but the father's occupation is still a sweep.  Father is down as George Miles Stocker.

(There are also 2 other girls Emma Jane and Eleanor Ada, daughters of George and Martha in 1863 and 1867 but father's occupation is a master Smith) so I'm not sure whether they belong yet)

Seems to indicate that George Miles is the father and George Joseph possibly Robert John's brother.

Marriage certificates I think are still the key.. :)

Going to do some further checks... ;D

1861 gives family as George, aged 34, & Martha, aged 31 with children :-

Martha A, aged 10
George J, aged 8
Georgiana, aged 6
Robert J, aged 4
Caroline E J, aged 1

1871 gives family as George, aged 42, & Martha, aged 40 with

George, aged 19
Georgiana, aged 16
Robert, aged 14
Caroline, aged 11
Emma, aged 6
Eleanor, aged 4

(the two odd baptisms that name the father as a Master Smith for Emma and Eleanor must belong to this family)

1881 - add another child Gertrude, aged 12, but no sign of the child George Miles or Ruth Rebecca.

Think we have a situation where father is possibly called George Miles, and the sons are George Joseph, Robert John and George Miles jnr.

When George Miles Jnr gets married in 1893  to Alice Eliza Goddard his father is given just as George Stocker, Sweep.

It is possible that he had 2 sons called George...seen it happen and the children were known by their middle names.

(to make matters more complicated it looks like the son George Joseph married a Martha too and all the sons I've found so far are all sweeps too) :o
