I think I'm about to make it worse!!

Have found Robert marrying Jane Barnes on 31 July 1876 at Holy Trinity, Paddington and father is given as George Joseph Stocker, sweep.  Robert's address at marriage is given as Gloucester Mews but he marries just as Robert and not Robert John.  That said, his sister Emma Jane marries as Emma Elizabeth Jane so I don't thnk we need to be worried about him losing the "John" though as his sister gains a name!

That address at Gloucester Mews also turns up on the marriages of Robert's siblings (Georgiana in 1872, George Joseph in 1875, Caroline in 1885 and Emma Elizabeth Jane in 1889) - who all marry at Holy Trinity, Paddington as well.

I wonder if George Joseph on Robert's marriage certificate is just a mistake.  None of the names of the witnesses help at all.

On the daughter Eleanor Ada's marriage certificate in 1890 father is George Miles Stocker.   The sister Georgiana is a witness and she suddenly gains Caroline as her middle name so it looks like they were all at it!

could well be correct - the original George then using Miles as a middle name for his children and then adopting it himself.    George gives his birthplace as Shoreditch

the date is correct if the census is anything to go by.

Miles Liggins is very likely to be George (who married Martha Wingfield)'s father.  I've I always put the names that they were christened by and then have them "also known as"

so George would be George Stocker aka George Miles Stocker.  It seems that Miles Liggins and Mary just christened him with "George" and the Miles bit got added later on so you've got:-

Miles Liggins and Mary Ann Stocker produced George Stocker (aka George Miles Stocker) who then married Martha Susannah Wingfield and produced Robert John

sometimes your ancestors can turn you to drink with the trouble they get into and the fact that some of them just loved to disappear off the planet  ;D
