Edward McGREEVY
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 13:01 BST (UK) »
Am looking for records of Edward McGreevy who arrived on the Roma in 1882 with his wife Margaret and four children. Edward was born in Ireland around 1830  and brought his family to settle in Queensland. I have found references to them settling in Ivory's Creek , Toogoolawah, but there the trail ends. I know that he had 9 children. four not born in Australia.
What I hope is that I could find information about my Great Grand Father , what he did and his children.

Thank you for your assistance.
 :)

Hi
If you browse this search site, you will locate births, deaths and marriages for the offsping of your family.
You will not need help to do that :D

https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/mainMenuSubmit.m?main_menu=IndexSearch

One of the deaths there....

In 1926 Reg C1795   MCGREEVY,Francis Joseph. father McGreevy,Edward McGreevy  mother Margaret McKee

Refers to this man , McGREEVY FRANCIS JOSEPH who enlisted for ww1 in 1916 aged 30
His mother , MARGARET,was his Next of Kin and he was a stock dealer. She was apparently living still at TOOGOOWALAH and there is a letter written on her behalf in the digitised file.

A browse of other records at this site will probably turn up more of the sons enlisting and furnish useful details for you.

Thanks for the information. Now all I have to do is track down James McGreevy.

According to family lore Anne McGreevy was a niece of Edward McGreevy who came to Australia to help with the children.  Now to find if she had any children by either husband.

Many thanks again

Hi Mcgreevy,

By using the QLD BMD  link  which I have given, you will find that ANNE did, indeed, have children

I am not able to offer information on her father JAMES McGREEVY. Perhaps others may.

As you have not given us the name of  EDWARD's parents, it is not immediately clear what is the  relationship between /EDWARD and ANNE (apart from your saying they were uncle and niece)

Thanks for the information, went and had a look and found the children. On the shipping record when Edward and Margaret McGreevy arrived Anne is aged 19 years old. So I do not think she was his daughter as he was only in his early thirties and his wife had four children under the age of 6.

Edward McGreevys parents are a bit of a contention, all I know is that he was born in County Down Ireland either in 1830 or 1846. His grave has him as being 83 when he died in 1913.

Thanks for the help Sue

Hi Mc Greevy

I have not suggested ANNE was EDWARD's daughter.

I suggested she may have been his sister.

According to the immigration list EDWARD was 31 years old at arrival and that gives an age gap of 10 or 12 years between him and ANNE at 19

It is hard to know how the age on the death record, 83 was reached.  I believe the immigration record would be more likey to be correct.

As you are unsure who were EDWARD's parents, perhaps you could give consideration to their being JAMES McGREEVY and ELIZABETH McLAUGHLIN.

Edward McGreevy's parents were James McGreevy who married Sarah Orr on 8th February 1827 at Down Patrick, County Down, Ireland. He was deceased at the time of Edward’s marriage in 1876.

Interesting thought about Anne being a sister, will have to check.

Thanks Sue
