do you have any other clues about the location ?

The source and date of the placename might help the search - Griffith's record (civil parish, townland), BMD record (registration district, sub district etc)..

This information was provided by the Latter Day Saints website where it reported the birth of my grandmother, Catherine Campbell, daughter of Edward Campbell and Mary Leigh (or Lee) 31 Oct 1870, and is all the info I have.

However, I will try those places you mention.

I see a reference to that birth on the Extracted records on familysearch - but it's gives the mother's name as Mary Lahy. Could it be a submitted records on IGI that you are looking at ?

This is the extracted record I found :
 Name: Catherine
 Birth Place: 343, Sligo
 Birth Date: 31 Oct 1870
 Father's Name: Edward Campbell
 Mother's Name: Mary Lahy

(these are extracted from civil registers)

The corresponding Civil Index ref. is :

 Name: Catherine Campbell
 Registration District: Sligo
 Event Type: Birth
 Year: 1870
 volume : 17 /  page : 343

You can use these refs. to order a birth cert.

You can see the area on the old OSI maps - I dont see any house name Inkwell - Rosses Point.  Click on the 25" option to the right for a c1890's map. The 6" maps are from c1820/1840

I now have a copy of the birth certificate.

It turns out that Inkwell House was a bit if a red herring.

The actual birthplace registered was Caltragh, Sligo. So, the reference to Rosses point is a bit of a mystery. Maybe she worked there later in life.

One question though, when I looked up Caltragh on google maps, it points to a location to the West of Sligo town, just of the N59. But I note that there is a larger place in the South suburbs of the town. From your knowledge of registrar details could this be the birthplace? Unfortunately, the certificate does not provide any more info.
