McMinn - Royal Artillery, Woolwich 1864
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 21:36 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help, I've searched and searched and keep coming up against brick walls. I've had some fantastic help whilst trying to trace my ancesters who were resident in India around 1880, however I was given information relating to my Great Grandfather William Henry McMinn who was born in 1864 in Greenwich, his father John McMinn was listed on the parish records as Sergeant, Horse Bde, Royal Artillery (St Mary Magdalene Church, Greenwich) but other than this and some additional births registered in India I can find nothing about him, no birth record, marriage record, census info etc I know he was married to Sarah McMinn but no more about her either (no maiden name etc, which makes it difficult to move forward with my search). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Melanie,

The details for the baptism of William Henry McMinn and for ordering the birth certificate (GRO reference provided) were given at replies #6 and #11 on the previous thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,478219.0.html

You should order the birth certificate to obtain Sarah's maiden name.

There are the following death / burial records for John and Sarah in India:

John McMinn - died and buried 16 Jan 1906 at Agra, Bengal (age 72)
Sarah May McMinn - died 20 Oct and buried 21 Oct 1911 at Agra, Bengal (age 71)

John and Sarah could have married almost anywhere bearing in mind John was in the army. Obtaining Sarah's maiden name may assist.

There may be service records for John in the WO96 or WO97 series of The National Archives and which may provide details of his birth and marriage. Findmypast is currently scanning these but I can't see a record for him among the papers so far scanned.

Nigel

Essex - Burrell, Thorogood
Norfolk - Alcock, Bowen, Bowers, Breeze, Burton, Creamer, Hammond, Sparkes, Wakefield, Wiggett
North Devon - Burgess, Chalacombe, Collacott, Goss
Northamptonshire - George, Letts, Muscutt, Richardson
Somerset - Barber
Wiltshire - Brine, Burges, Carey, Gray, Lywood, Musselwhite, Perris, Read, Turner, Wilkins

Sorry I should have been clearer. It was John McMinn that I was looking for more information on. Nigel,  the deaths and burial info is more than I had and will hopefully help me move forward. i will order the certificate for William McMinn as suggested and also for my Great Grandmother Nora McMinn as I'm sure they will help with my search. Thanks for the extra information, any info is great info.

The service records also sound worth a check too,  thanks for that.

Melanie
